Confused By Tire Rack Test Results?

There are two tests that include the PS2, F1-D3, and RS-A; from Nov. '03 and June. '04. In both tests the RS-A receives a 6.88 in Ride and a 6.79 in noise.

However, in one the PS2 receives a 7.75 in Ride and a 7.22 in Noise, making it smoother and quieter than the RS-A. In the June test it receives a 6.39 in Ride and a 6.35 in Noise, giving you a penalty for the handling.

The F1-D3 is similar, having scores of 7.86 and 7.22 for Ride and Noise respectively in the first test and 6.48 and 6.41 in the second.

Since the RS-A was a reference, what happened? Which is right?

This is important to us since virtually any Max Performance or Ultra Performance tire will meet our handling needs. What we want to maximize is ride quality and silence.

Thanks,

David

depends on the weather
looking at the available data should lead you to the conclusion that the F1 offers better ride quality than the PS2 and max performance tires are effected more by conditions than the "control / generic" RSA is ....

Actually, the results seem to indicate that the S03 and F1-D3 have similar ride quality, both very slightly better than the PS2. However, the tests seem to show that the PZero Russo is significantly better than all of them.

Similar results with noise, except there the PS2, F1-D3, and S03 are all similar, with the Pirelli having a big edge.

The real need for a reference point is to compare them with other classes of tires

What did happen with the results? Can someone make the correction?

I have actually requested a test between the F1 and the Rosso because in my opinion those 2 tires offer the best ride quality from the max performance catagory (my opinion puts the F1 ahead) but, we have not done a test with those 2 head to head yet

However it would be good if the reference worked. For example, in one test the S03 rides much better than the RS-A. And the PZero Nero A/S is about the same.

Does the S03 ride better than the PZero Nero A/S?

FWIW, I replaced the stock Continentals with the Rosso Direzionali last year on my Boxster. Big improvement in noise and performance, little change in ride quality of the optional sport suspension.

The Rosso also came out first in Autocar's test, beating the PS2. The PS2 won on a dry track. That would be more critical for the Boxster than an MB 4-door.

Since we get a lot of rain in Virginia, I picked the Rosso because of its reported performance on both dry and wet. I haven't been disappointed.
