The 2016 Paris Auto Show brought more than a few surprises from AMG. After announcing the AMG GT-C roadster and a new hypercar, AMG announced it plans to do more with hybrid and electric vehicles. With the success of their turbo V6 hybrid technology systems in Formula 1, it makes sense for AMG to lean more towards batteries and electric motors, rather than sheer engine volume. Moving even further, AMG boss Tobias Moers explained that an all-electric AMG could soon be a reality.

The SLS Electric Drive, pictured above, was AMG’s first tango with all-electric technology, and proved to be quite successful. It still stands as the fastest production electric car around the Nürburgring, lapping in just under 8 minutes. However, I have to interject an opinion here: AMG as a brand may lose a bit of its identity with an all-electric car. The noises that come from a BMW, Aston Martin, or AMG motor are a big part of the appeal. Electric motors all sound the same though. And eventually, they will all drive the same too. Perhaps I’m just resisting the inevitable. What do you think?
