Mercedes-Benz Announces New Engine Family
Mercedes is hard at work developing a new line of engines, starting with the facelifted S-Class. This modular engine family will comprise inline four cylinder, inline six cylinder, and V8 configurations.
Much like BMW, each cylinder will displace one half liter, with the four cylinders displacing 2.0 liters, the inline sixes displacing 3.0 liters, and a 4.0 liter V8. Fuel economy and efficiency will be the name of the game for this new engine family, employing various advanced technologies to meet these goals.
The four cylinder features incredible power density, with Mercedes-Benz claiming about 134 horsepower per liter. This engine uses a 48-volt electrical system to drive a belt-driven starter/generator (RSG). This replaces the traditional starter motor/alternator system in use in nearly every car sold today. Most notably, this setup allows for coasting with the engine off.
The six cylinder builds on these features, utilizing a similar integrated starter/generator (ISG) system and adding an electric compressor, building boost pressure at low RPMs and virtually eliminating turbo lag.
The V8 will utilize a twin-turbo setup familiar to AMG fans everywhere, but utilizing smaller displacement and cylinder deactivation to achieve its goals for efficiency and fuel economy. Mercedes’ system not only closes the intake and exhaust valves, but also shuts off fuel and ignition, leaving no unburnt fuel in the cylinder.
Mercedes-Benz fans won’t have to wait long to see these advancements in action. While the four-cylinders are already in use in Europe, American enthusiasts will see these new engines first hand by next summer in the 2018 S-Class.
