evaporator temperature sensor location ?
Hello
Can some one tell me where is the evaporator temperature sensor mounted on the E320 1999, I remove the panel under streeing wheel, but still can not find it.

Evaporator Temperature Sensor Location 1998 E320
Buy the new one first so you know what it looks like. I paid $40
for mine. You need to remove the plastic housing underneath the steering
column. There are 3 large screw and 1 small screw. You also will need
to pull the plastic pressure fitted plug from behing the accelerator
so you can remove it from the car. Unscrew the housing for the emergency
brake cable and slide the latch through the opening. There's also a diag
connector that needs to be removed. Slide the top (from behind the
cover) to the right and push the connector through from underneath. There's
a vent that comes off by turning the screw of half turn. The carpet cover
portion is simply pressure fitted. The part next to th console needs to
slide up so you can remove it. The sensor is attached to the evaporator just about in the middle the compartment about two feet up from the floor. It has a couple of wires attached to the connector. Pull the sensor out and then disconnect the cable. Attach the new one and reinsert. Just pay attention to how it was originally attached. It took me about 30 minutes of which 20 were spent figuring out how to disassemble the housing.

Thanks for the write up mikejosh. One correction - it is the hood latch not the Em brake that needs unscrewed (at least in my car) . The most difficult part of this job was taking pics. Here are some pictures of my 1999 E55. My sensor cost $70.00
Here is the sensor. You only see about a 1/2" of it when it is intalled in the evaperator. (The end that is attached to the wires under my thumb)
This photo is looking towards the firewall/center console. The sensor is at the top of the green and red wires but is not seen in this picture.
Here my middle finger is touching the installed sensor, but it is impossible to see because every thing is black.
Here is the sensor. You only see about a 1/2" of it when it is intalled in the evaperator. (The end that is attached to the wires under my thumb)

Great information. the question is after replacing the evaporator sensor do you need to reset anything at all? im still showing codes b1227,b1231,b1232,b1234.

interesting… i’ve wondered the same thing myself… do these codes stay recorded or clear on their own after driving a while..??
i’m currently showing the last three error codes myself and wonder if i should just replace these sensors along with the evap temp sensor to be safe or not..??
i also show these error codes… which i can’t seem to identify… any help..??

Actually i took off the battery so it would reset, and the only thing that showed up after was Eb1232 the aircon did run but not as cold as it was

sounds as if you might be low on freon
either that or a sensor has gone bad...

mines intermittent or so it seems…
seems to be making cold air again but i haven’t really had it out during the heat of the day or working for more then 15 minutes. (just short drives)…
but i ordered the evaporator temp. sensor (autohausaz.com) and will wait to see if it stops producing cold air anytime (maybe weekend)… if so, we’ll try the new sensor to see if it’s the fix… keep ya posted.
hope this is it… but on the plus side, i am leaning stuff… and that’s always a good thing…

A mechanic check the aircon today and put in some freon after that he said it was the compresor, then i told him that i put in 2 can of freon . as it turn out there is an too much air in the system. it works well now and did not change the refrigerant temperature sensor. the only sensor i change was the evaporator temperature sensor Thanks to all the info.........

Well the evaporator temperature sensor came in from autohausaz.com and although the system appeared to be working this past week… yesterday, it did act up after a long drive in 104*F temperatures… and once again the system was showing the “E” error code on # 7.
so i decided to change the evap. temp. sensor… when i removed the old one it looked different then the replacement… the replacement part is exactly like the one in sean6543’s picture above… but the one i removed had a wire harness about four inches long coming out of the temp. housing that plugs into the evaporator… also the case around the temperature probe was shaped different… but it installed the same way and it all went back together and seems to be working now.
i disconnected the battery (pos. + neg. for a couple of minutes)… trying to clear the trouble codes but no luck… the same codes remain…
how long do i need to leave it disconnected to clear the old codes..??

Hi, I'm a newbie here. I have 2001 E320 1) AC is cold, but not as it can be and b) while testing to get error code or AC is used I noticed compressor was running constantly 10 minutes +.
I ran AC Diagnostic procedures got below.

Is it not blowing hard?Have you changed your cabin air filters?
Nothing indicates the evap sensor has a problem so why would you be considering changing it?
The a/c systwm in these cars is a variable system and the compressor cones on by demand if you want it off at a temp of 70 press the ec button and it will just allow ambient 70 f air in and the compressor will shut down.

is the outside temp sensor,located in the vent next to the drivers side fog light.Looks like the end of a pen.Nothing to do with the evap sensor which most times don't throw a code,just toss off a default temp for value #5 like 135f.that way the compressor shuts down instead of freezing uop the evaporator.
run the tests again values 1-8 at the directions instructions and also the errors,then clear the errors while in error mode by pressing both auto buttons at the same time.
Lack of air flow on all settings can be the cabin filters are full of crud,diy on benzworld.org w210 section filters at autohausaz.com cabin and pollen filters .
they can get so filthy air can hardly pass through them.

Just the part where he is under the dash and pulling the screws and sliding out the parts to get the cover removed.
push the steering wheel in the outer most position and crawl (contort yourself)under the dash and with a flashlight look up along the trans hump ,you will see the end of the temp sensor sticking out of the side of the hump.If you have the new one handy you will know when you see it.

I was able to replace the evap temp sensor and now my ac stay on, thank you so much for everybody's advice. I ran diag on it and I'm getting a new error code:
EB1230 which means implausible temperature reading. Do I need to clear out the existing codes or is this a new issue?
I do remember on the evap temp sensor (new), I accidentially and slightly bent the needle, but I bent it back. Here are my numbers:

Since you replaced the evap temp sensor and all is working properly now,just clear (erase the error code) by pressing both auto buttons at the same time when in the error reading mode.
And don't make a habit of bending new parts in the future

I did, thank you so much! Now, I will battle the SRS light issue. According to my MB mechanic, he hooked a computer but it did NOT generate any codes for the SRS system, any clue?
