2005 CDI EGR problems
Hi My EGR carboned up on my car (E320 CDI 2005)and I lost power on and off. No codes came up. I googled the trouble and they said try cleaning the EGR I was on vacation and with the tools I had in my trunk I was able to clean the carbon out of it . It is on the back of the intake manifold it is controled by a motor. It carboned up again after a few thousand miles so I ended up replacing it at about $400. I didn't upgrade the software just changed to EGR and had no problems after 10,000 miles.

Carboned EGR
Hi I don't know about the blue tec engine but my experience with EGR valves is they all carbon up and I've had 5 Mercedes diesels. They are easy to clean, remove 2 screws and disconnect the wire, pull it out spray some brake cleaner on it and lubricate the motor shaft with high temp lubrication. I've reused the gasket. I was in bumper to bumper traffic when it first happen and the car showed no codes on the dash not even a check engine light. The car had no power. I babyed the car to my destination and googled the trouble and had it fixed in about a half hour. It carboned up again and not wanting to get stranded in a place I couldn't fix it I just replaced it myself. Saves the trouble of cleaning it every year or so. The replacement EGR has a different design so maybe it will last longer. Hope this helps Al

EGR problem
Hi Well I hope that the ultra low sulphur diesel is the cure. I'll let yous know if the replacement EGR carbons up as I replaced it last year . I know it will be the first place I will look if I get the loss of power issue again. Thanks Al

It is not. The EGR plugs up from the combination of exhaust soot and crankcase vent oil vapors returned to the intake.
The only two ways to prevent EGR buildup are to disable the EGR or reroute the CCV system so it vents to the atmosphere instead of the intake.

Are there any disadvantages in disabling the ERG in the modern diesel engine ? Does it increase exhaust gas temps or upset the engine management system?
