I have a 99 E320 stalling when hot operating temp and then hard start up. I'm going to replace crank position sensor CPS and mass air flow sensor MAF and possibly camshaft position sensor.
If that doesn't fix I will be pointing fingers towards bad ECU. Any other ideas?

I have a problem on a 1997 E320 it cranks and runs for 20 seconds the most then dies, usually it's more like 2 seconds running,i changed out the cps and it started and ran for almost a minute then just died again,i have fuel pressure and no codes, weird thing is if i step on the gas it instantly dies also i took off the MAF and it looks clean, left the MAF off and started the engine while blocking the intake hose and it ran for as long as i blocked the intake hose, anyone have any ideas?

I suggest CPS and possibly throttle position sensor...I had to replace the throttle body on my 2002 e430 and it has ran perfectly since..over a year.

I'm looking into replacing fuel filter due to the age of the car.
I can see that the throttle position sensor car shut the car off, but my car shuts off when it reaches hot operating temp only.

Please understand - with the "age" of this thread you would be better served in the future to start as new thread.
1) Then your "issue" most likely is to replace CPS sensor - key failure symptom is engine "cuts off" when hot, and long-hard-starting/or-no-start whem warm - then when "cold" no problem.
Replace CPS sensor with genuine Bosch CPS ONLY - and verify type (one-prong vrs 2-prong) by pulling old sensor and looking at connector type before ordering new genuine Bosch sensor.
2) Fuel filter - replace with genuine Bosch or Mann ONLY - the filter has a presure regulation function and other non/quasi-brand fuel filters generally can be poor on this critical function.
3) TPS sensor failure would have entirely different symptoms that you did not seem to have.
Keep the beat !

Hi all!
I see that this thread hasn't been active in a while, but I figured I would ask here before creating a new post.
my E320 has recently started to show signs of what I am hoping is only the Crank Position Sensor starting to wear out.
I bought this E320 for winter driving 2 months ago and twice now (on 2 separate occasions) it has shut off at idle. There is no check engine light, no codes, nothing. It just turns itself off without any warning or sputtering. Started back up both times and runs like normal afterwards.
I would like to fix the issue before it becomes a bigger problem and before it potentially shuts down while moving.
The car has 175k miles and I am not sure if the CPS has ever been changed.
Also twice now the cars RPMs will be a little wonky on startup (fluctuates up and down for a few seconds) and I notice somewhat of a faint burning smell coming from the passenger side, but it goes away quickly. This does not happen in tandem with the shut downs though so I am not sure if they are a related problem.
I feel that my cars symptoms match pretty well with what is described in this thread, but just wanted some second opinions from those who have owned this car longer than I have. Any input is greatly appreciated!
P.S. I do not trust my local dealer as far as I could throw them, they have tried to rip me off more than once

i been having same problem with my 99 e320....
and so i changed the CPS---it ran little longer, but then died again
did i overlook something when putting it back in? spacer? added part to ECU???
i removed the old and put in the new... i didn't see any spacer, but suppose it could've fallen when took out the old? but there wasn't a new one with the one i got (bosch)
pls thx
