How to smooth out the sound after Downpipes?
Hey,
So I currently have Weistec DPs installed on my car and it's loud. It's also quite raspy and sounds like a diesel truck when I'm idling. To be 100% honest, it doesn't sound 'sophisticated' at all. I do love the sound it makes under full acceleration.
I am looking to smooth out the sound a little bit and wanted to hear your recommendations.
Would an X-Pipe do the trick? How about an H-Pipe? I don't know much about exhausts.
Also for reference, I do have the PE.
Here is how it currently sounds:
I appreciate everyone's input.
Thanks

Lol guys!! Come on.
Yes it's 40% louder inside.
I want a sound closer to this:
I know the mustang (yes yikes) has a flat NA v8 crank etc but what can I do to get something closer to that sound?
Don't treat me like I'm crazy!

thanks and my apologies for the silly questions. i'd like to know as much as I can before butchering my exhaust.

If you already have an H-pipe, an X pipe really won't do anything.
And that's not something you simply just throw on the car. That's exhaust shop work.

You're really over reacting to this. Just chill on it for a few weeks and see if you grow to like it. It sounds good to me and pretty much everyone that's heard it on the video. You might be being a little unfair to it right now. You're definitely being unrealistic if you think you're going to get it to sound ANYTHING like a 5.2L N/A V8 w/ a flatplane crank that's spinning to 9k.

Hey sean!
Well I've had it for 2 months now and it doesn't seem to be growing on me
It sounds too rough in my opinion. I keep comparing it to my old M156 CL63 where I replaced the OEM resonator by the one from the CLK63 BS. THAT sounded amazing. I know it's unfair but I can't help it.
I always strive to keep the OEM tone. Right now, it's obvious that I've done something to the exhaust and I feel like it makes it a "rice" car. I just want to tame the sound a little bit, make it a little smoother.

use some vibrant racing straight through muffler to smooth out the sound.

I was going to forward the tips to the shop that'll be performing the work since it'll probably be the first car of its kind where they'll be doing this mod.

It's a (very) expensive alternative, but you should consider downpipes with high-flow cats. Or you can return back to stock and remove the secondary cat (v-banded so you can swap back) - I think that's the best solution for those that want a bit more noise without dealing with the DP install, noise, and smell.
If those options are a no go, then I'd look into an axle back exhaust with OEM DP's.

That is indeed a very pricey alternative. I already paid $2800 to have these downpipes installed (including $1k in labor dropping the tranny). Reversing it would be counter productive. I'm also about to spend another 2k to get it retuned to get rid of the check engine light. Overall, I spent over 145k on this car due to an expensive out-of-pocket repair. I can't afford much more

I am extremely happy with the new tone my car now produces.
In 'Park' it rumbles like you would expect a V8 too and no droning on the highway.

Hmm... My bad on telling you that you were over-reacting then. I didn't know that you had this done months ago. Just thought it was a 'few days old' kind of thing.
I'd suggest searching in your area for a highly reputable muffler shop and explain to them what you want and they might have the best answer believe it or not.
Doesn't necessarily need to be highly reputable either. Sometimes you just need to find a guy that's been working on exhausts for 20+ years.

My guess is, MB put the H-pipe in to increase the rumble, given the cats in the downpipes. You removed the cats in the downpipes, so now you have too much rumble. I would do an X-pipe first, and only if that didn't work would I touch the AMG back boxes.
Good luck.
