Extended warranty?
I recently purchased a 2007 SL550. Having spent about 4 weeks checking out this forum I came to a conclusion that things could go south pretty fast with ABC, EIS, etc... Is extended used car warranty an option? Any warranty provider you recommend? There are websites where I can comparison shop but I really would prefer not to fill out the form and get pestered by half a dozen providers.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I also recently purchased a 07 SL550 and am considering the purchase of an aftermarket warranty. Here is what I have found out so far, I have made the contacts with most of the companies offering exclusionary policies and spoken with too many salesmen trying to convince me to purchase useless contracts that are not exclusionary. I have found some apparently good contracts for $5000-$6000 range which is more than I can convince myself to spend at this point. The most attractive contract to me so far has been presented by Lisa at Autopom. It is an exclusionary policy but it does exclude the navigation( unless you purchase a special policy for high tech) and shocks and struts and my understanding is the ABC systems labels the 4 wheel units as struts. The cost is $3700 with a $500 deductible for 5 years and 34,000 additional miles, my car reads 42,000 miles currently. I am still considering all the options and possibly going without. That is all I can offer for now, I look forward to hearing some other input.

Thanks, Ptrigg17! I just sent an email to Lisa and awaiting plans/quotes.
I have totally restored a 1994 Corvette ZR-1 including bored, stroked, ported and cammed motor with my friends. So definitely not a total stranger to cars but I can tell that some system for SL may be serviced only by the dealer.

2005 SL 600,2002 M3,1993 Vette!
Try USAA 800 531 8111
Great company!
I had my 05 SL600 with them on extended warranty but
It ran out.
Used to be for military officers only but that's not the case any more .
It's worth a try?
You do have to be a USAA member!
Which is any one that's been in the military or a family member of someone who was in the military and is a member.
Disregard the recording when it asks for your PIN number
Just keep listening.
When prompted ask for extended vehicle protection.
I can't get it again because mine is over
10 years old

There are actually very few components that can only be serviced by the dealer, and those are the same ones on other MBZs. Basically, anything that requires SCN coding is pretty much dealer-only service. SCN = Software Calibration Number which is basically coding firmware into an electronic component and this requires a live connection to MBZ via their SDS (Star Diagnosis System). These are mostly items related to security and drive authorization. The ABC, SBC, ESP, and other high-tech components are all user-serviceable with the proper equipment and skills. SDS is usually one of those things you need. You can get "Chinese clone" version for under $500. Of course then you need to have the skills and time to learn to use it and learn the car's systems. Remember, this is not a really a car, it's a rolling computer data center.
