Mercedes Unimog Models Give Us Off-road Daydreams

By -

There’s more options in just the Unimog lineup than the entire Mercedes showroom.

We all know the G-Wagen is the “King of Beverly Hills bling,” but when you live somewhere off the grid, and off-road capability matters most, there’s only one Mercedes to choose. The infamous Unimog. The bluntness of its looks and its name create a perfect harmony of what to expect from Mercedes’ most capable rig, but there’s a few options to pick from when looking at the Unimog lineup, as there’s some really cool things you can affix to the versatile chassis.

If you wanted to do truck stuff with your Unimog, the U200 and U500 series trucks are for you. Emergency services are the best use for the shorter Unimog. This one is built with the intention of having various apparatus attached to it. Available with a high pressure hydraulic system, and even auxiliary diesel engines, any type of support equipment is right at home working on the back of this truck.

The real fun to be had is with the U4000-U5000 series. With a larger configuration allowing a double cab “Doka” truck, this series of Unimog tugs at the heart-strings of everyone who played with a toy truck when they were younger.

Coming in as a G-wagon on steroids, the Unimog’s off-road capabilities are simply unmatched. Water fording capabilities up to 32 inches are on hand thanks to elevated portal suspension and engine intake tubes that are resistant to water intrusion. But if you’re encountering rocks rather than water, you enjoy a very steep approach angle, short overhangs and single rather than dually rear axles make the U4000 and U5000 nearly unstoppable. And if people are along for the ride, the U5000 has room for all of your friends to enjoy the ride.
