The Mercedes G-Wagon has long held a reputation for being an incredibly capable off-road machine, even if the vast majority of owners never take theirs off the tarmac. This rugged machine has become more of a status symbol in recent years, a boxy SUV with timeless style that’s often the ride of choice for celebrities and others that want to be noticed, and it’s certainly good at that, too. However, for those that want the ultimate in luxurious off-road performance, a company called Pit26 Motorsports has just the ticket – a heavily-modified Mercedes-AMG G63 geared toward overlanding adventures.

Pit26 has formed a reputation for making and selling all sorts of G-Wagon parts and accessories in the U.S., but as is usually the case, it wanted to build something special to show off its wares. Luckily for them, a client recently enlisted the outfit to build a Mercedes-AMG G63 capable of going pretty much anywhere, giving them a prime opportunity to show just what’s capable when someone has the budget and desire to create what might be the ultimate off-road G-Wagon.

For starters, this particular G63 is rocking portal axles – perhaps the most impactful upgrade one can make – giving it 20-inches of additional wheelbase and a 5.9-inch lift for seriously enhanced ground clearance. Pit26 then added a set of Bilstein coilovers and loads of underbody protection before capping it off with a set of matte black 18-inch Innov8 Racing wheels wrapped with 38×13.5 R18 Toyo M/T tires.

From there, a set of custom running boards were created to ensure the driver and passengers can get in and out of this rather tall ride, while the wheel arches were enlarged to make room for the new running stock. A custom roof rack was fitted with off-road lighting and an adapter that accommodates an an IKamper Mini tent, while a dual bike rack resides in the now-open rear cargo area – perfect for those long nights out on the trails.

As far as mechanicals go, Pit26 left this one alone, because there’s really no need to improve upon the stock twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, which churns out 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque in stock form. The company did add a Magnaflow exhaust system to enhance the way it sounds, however. The result of this work is perhaps the most impressive modern G-Wagon out there, and proof that you can, in fact, take one of these beloved machines to places other than the mall.
