Being the “step-anything” isn’t usually fun. You’re often overlooked and misunderstood. Thankfully, Mercedes-AMG’s new C43 doesn’t suffer from such traumas.

It’s not misunderstood, and after the word gets out of how thrilling the new faux AMG really is, it certainly won’t be overlooked. Car and Driver recently tested the 2017 C43 AMG, and they think it’s worthy of the Affalterbach badge. But is it, really?

A 3.0-liter V6 capable of 362 horsepower can be found in the engine bay of the new baby AMG. The transmission is a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC unit, and together they deliver remarkable performance. Zero to 60 mph only takes 4.1 seconds, and it can reach the quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds at 110 mph. Sure, if you must know — no, the engine isn’t hand-built like in the “real” AMGs, but clearly it’s no slouch.

Regardless, the properly named C43 still lacks the hordes of power of the C63, but it’s far from a disappointment.
