A 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG with a 50-shot of nitrous hits the dyno to test the real world improvements.

MBWorld member Nurburgringer recently added a nitrous system to his 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 and he hit the dyno to find out how much power he gained at the wheels with a “50-shot”. For those unfamiliar with nitrous oxide, a setup is typically measured by how much power it adds, so a 50-shot should add somewhere in the area of 50 horsepower. In some vehicles, the engine takes to the laughing gas a little better and picks up more than 50hp and in others, it adds a little less.

To see just how much of an impact the 50-shot makes on a 2005 AMG CLK55, the OP headed to the Eurocharged dyno for a couple hard pulls. Not surprisingly, the 50-shot added about 50 wheel horsepower in the bottled Benz and he documented the whole process in a thread in the W208/W209 section of the forum.

Nurburgringer’s AMG

The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG owned by Nurburgringer has been to the dyno a handful of times. When he hit the rollers stock, the car laid down 300 wheel horsepower, which is about 20% down from the official power rating of 362 horsepower at the crankshaft. With an automatic transmission, a drivetrain loss factor of 20% is pretty reasonable, so 300rwhp is a solid figure for the stock Benz.

Next, he added headers to his CLK55, tuning the engine to make more power with the better exhaust flow while also tuning the transmission to make better use of the extra power. After the headers and tune, this 2005 AMG made 326 horsepower at the wheels, picking up 25whp from the headers and the tune.

Hitting the Bottle

After that, Nurburgringer wanted to add a bunch more power, so he added a 50-shot setup from Nitrous Express to his Mercedes-Benz and hit the dyno. With the 50-shot, the CLK55 sent 374 horsepower to the rear wheels, up 48whp from the headers/tune dyno run. It should be noted that the nitrous system also added 54lb-ft of rear-wheel torque, jumping from 329 to 383.

Unfortunately, there is no video of the bottled dyno run, but the video below offers a look at this car during the header/tune dyno run, so you can hear the 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG roar, courtesy of the YouTube channel of kedelbach.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
