AMG GLC 63 S Becomes New SUV Nurburgring King

By -

Mercedes’ premier SUV smashes the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s 7.5-minute Green Hell record.

Every manufacturer wants to have the vehicles with the fastest lap around the legendary Nurburgring. Throwing down for the cause with a halo car or all of the highest-performing vehicles available is par for the course, but some manufacturers want all of their vehicles to stake their claim on the Green Hell.

One of those claims is that of the fastest SUV around the ‘Ring. Motor Authority the new holder of that claim is Mercedes-AMG, who recently set a time of 7:49.369 in a 2019 GLC 63 S.

Claimed with Mercedes-AMG Development Engineer Markus Hofbauer behind the wheel in his first go, the new time smashes the previous record held by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which set a time of 7:51.7 in late September 2017. The new time also gives back the fastest SUV title to a German manufacturer, after the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S completed its lap in 7:59.74 in 2014.

While the Alfa set the previous time with a 510-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with all-wheel drive, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S knocked-off the Italian stallion with AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The 503-horse unit may be short a few ponies in comparison, but it’s also backed by Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, an electronic limited-slip diff, and big tires in the back.

According to Motor Authority, Mercedes-AMG is working on an update to the GLC 63 S, which could mean the SUV will be able to keep its claim on the ‘Ring for much longer before another SUV takes the claim. The new GLC 63 S is scheduled for an early 2019 arrival.
