AMG GT R Roars Like a Savage in Gorgeous Feature Video

By -

AMG’s GT R belts out an orchestra that almost belies the fact that turbos and OPF filters are contained within the exhaust.

AMG engines have long been known for their guttural roar. The first “63” engines are YouTube favorites when searching “loud” or “straight pipe.” Since those engines came out, turbos have been added, yet AMG still manages to get an ample amount of percussiveness past those spinning turbines. Clearly the AMG exhaust engineers know what they are doing.

AMG’s GT R has been refreshed throughout the years, but the changes have been a bit subtle. In its current iteration, Road Show explains the cars outward and inward appearance tie this coupe’s DNA to the AMG GT 4-door. But more interestingly, this GT R in the video has Europe’s new OPF exhaust system. They are required, and help AMG lower their tailpipe emissions.

The terminology used in this instance, “Otto Particulate Filters” indicates another filter in the exhaust placed downstream from the catalytic converter. They could also be called “Gasoline Particulate Filters” but the function is essentially the same. The filter is designed to extract additional particles that the catalytic converter didn’t catch. The fact that this AMG sounds good at all is somewhat of a miracle.

The video showcases what an AMG would sound like in the US if these exhaust filters are implemented stateside. Thankfully there’s still a decent roar from the central exhaust. All of our favorite bits of audio are demonstrated throughout the video. Startup sounds, revs, drive-by shots, tunnels and onboard highway runs show that AMG still has a soul, but it has been watered down by the filters thrown in the mix.

Knowing the extra filter is in the exhaust still leaves us wanting just a little bit more. Granted, there are pops and bangs still present and 585 horsepower is still ample. But at times the engine almost sounds strained, especially that under-hood audio. DriveTribe has explained that these aren’t systems that can easily be yanked off the car the day you buy it. They are required by European law and if your car is found to be driving without them, it won’t be road legal any more. Bummer.
