So you’ve always had a fetish for the Mercedes 190E Evo and you have $1.1-million burning a hole in your pocket?
Well, we have some good news for you! HWA, the company founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht, the man who founded AMG and left because he rather wanted a race team, will build 100 new restomod HWA Evos based on the great original.
Will New Evo Be an AMG Dressed in Period-Corr Attire?
HWA, by the way ran AMG’s German DTM Touring Car team in the early 2000s, but now it has its own ideas on production cars. And what better solution than to build a short run of a stronger, better Evos using today’s technology all wrapped up in that epic winged look? HWA is already teasing us with these sketches that look… well, just like the old Evo II.
The new Evo will however benefit an all-new drivetrain. Which suggests a significant step up from the original’s 232 HP and 181 lb.-ft of torque. Huge back then, but a mere drop in the ocean today. It will be interesting to see exactly what will power the Evo. But we’d suspect that HWA has done a deal with AMG to make sure it will be right up to date.
Which would mean to secure a run of the last 100 or so 610 HP 4-litre biturbo V8 engines off outgoing E 63 AMG engine run along with the AWD drivetrains, chassis, and brakes to make it all work. Or something like that!
Only 100 HWA Evos Will be Built
HWA has also called on the services of renowned car restoration company Curated to oversee the Evo project. Curated is famous for its work on ultra-rare classics like the Bugatti EB110, Ferrari F40 and the Jaguar XJ220. Now busy itself with merging state-of-the-art technology with ‘90s nostalgia ‘for the thrill of the drive.’
Production of the 100 HWA Evos will commence in 2025. Only 500 original Mercedes-Benz 190Es were built to qualify the car to race in the DTM back in the ’90s.
