Doug DeMuro to Part Ways with 2012 E63 AMG Wagon

By -

Famed YouTuber is parting ways with his E63 AMG Wagon for several reasons. Unfortunately, a subpar CPO experience is one of them.

Are fast wagons the coolest vehicles on the planet? Probably. The E63 AMG Wagon is an amazing piece of machinery. It’s basically the last performance wagon of its kind in America too. Fortunately for us there’s plenty of people who share our enthusiasm for the model. But sometimes even great cars have their drawbacks.

That’s essentially what popular automotive YouTuber Doug DeMuro experienced during his three year ownership of his 2012 E63 AMG Wagon. Overall, he liked the wagon. But he no longer has a need for it after moving to California. There’s another issue as well. His CPO warranty utterly failed him. Based on this video, it wouldn’t be surprising if he stops buying used Mercedes models altogether.

Parting Ways With a Stellar E63 AMG Wagon

DeMuro decided to put his E63 AMG Wagon up for sale because it doesn’t fit his lifestyle anymore. With his home base now in San Diego, he doesn’t need the car to be a jack-of-all-trades vehicle like he did when he lived in Philadelphia. Until recently, he employed the wagon for daily driver duty to take him to the places he goes to shoot his videos. But southern California traffic is relentless and seems to have taken its toll on the reviewer.

Additionally, there are some baked in issues with his wagon that swayed him away from continued E63 AMG ownership. For starters, his wagon is configured a bit oddly. It has the smaller 18 inch wheels. That’s a bit strange in itself, but DeMuro viewed it as a plus. That is, until he really started driving it. “But I always found it to be surprisingly uncomfortable. Especially considering there are several different suspension settings. You would think the most comfortable one would be pretty comfortable, but that’s not really true,” says DeMuro.

Another demerit against the car is the interior color scheme, which consists of a series of beige and brown. “This is undoubtedly the most elderly, old person, retirement home way you could have possibly ordered this car back in 2012,” says DeMuro. Beige interiors are no longer in vogue, and for an AMG, the color isn’t a perfect fit, so his assessment of why it doesn’t work is understandable.

CPO Woes

Ultimately, DeMuro’s diminished love for his wagon is based on practical considerations. With one major exception: his certified pre-owned experience left a lot to be desired. He purchased several extra years of CPO warranty coverage beyond what his original deal offered. Unfortunately it seems he didn’t get a lot of bang for his buck. The windshield wiper motor failed and Mercedes straight up denied the claim, saying it was a normal wear and tear issue. “Either Mercedes-Benz is implying that it’s normal for only 1 windshield wiper to work after like, 7 years of car ownership, or their warranty is just crap,” says DeMuro. As a 2012 model, DeMuro’s wagon is less than ten years old. And it has a perfectly average amount of miles on it. That Mercedes forced him to pay for that repair is disappointing.

Compounding Issues

His wiper debacle paled in comparison to his subsequent issue. As a result of shoddy workmanship, he was forced to pay for an electrical failure caused by a poorly sealed windshield. You could accurately call him the polar opposite of a happy camper. The problem was compounded by the fact that a Mercedes-Benz dealership performed the windshield replacement originally. “That repair was $2,600. The warranty on this car was something like 3 to $4,000 extra. I will never again purchase another Mercedes-Benz CPO warranty,” says DeMuro.

Ultimately, he comes down pretty hard against Mercedes for how he was treated. “To me, Mercedes-Benz CPO: not worth it. Don’t buy it. Get a third-party warranty or just go with no warranty at all because apparently that’s what I’ve been doing for the last 3 years, even though I thought I had Mercedes-Benz CPO coverage,” says DeMuro. Clearly, Mercedes failed DeMuro. He should not have been forced to pay for a mediocre repair job and the company should have been able to ascertain exactly what happened. Even if it didn’t perfectly quality as a CPO repair, they should have accommodated him in some way for what happened.

Still a Positive Experience

Even with all the negative aspects of his ownership experience, he still had a lot of positive things to say about what he thinks of the 2012 E63 AMG Wagon. “But this is a way that you can have a family car that’s still sporty and cool and exiting and rare and makes you happy,” says DeMuro. Obviously, it’s beneficial for him to say it’s a great car. But DeMuro seems to have a genuine affection for it regardless.

Overall, the 18 minute video is essential viewing for any E63 AMG Wagon enthusiast. He detailed his ownership experience thoroughly. And if you’re interested in buying it, make sure to head on over to his new car auction website to make a bid. It’s already received over thirty bids!
