Enter the G-Code
Over the past few weeks, Mercedes has been thoroughly starting its SUV rebranding and overhaul with rumors about the new G-Wagen, the M designation going away, and a smaller baby G-Wagen in the works.
To continue looking toward the future, Mercedes just released the first teaser of its newest concept, the G-Code. Aimed at being the first SUC (sports utility coupe), the G-Code swings for the fences in both design and technology.
The SUC debuted at the opening of Mercedes’ new Product Engineering Center in Beijing, and the G-Code is definitely aimed at the emerging market that is China, which is apparent in the language of the press release with it using a “modern lifestyle and digital affinity” to describe the potential buyer of the G-Code.
Like many modern vehicles, and an increasing number of Mercedes cars, the G-Code is a hybrid using a combustion engine to power the front wheels and electricity when needed to power the rear. What’s also interesting about this concept is the use of multi-voltaic silver paint. Essentially that means the entire car acts as a large solar array continuously gathering solar energy for the car’s use.
While just a concept at the moment, the design language is definitely where Mercedes is hinting the company will go in the future. It’s an interesting little car. Much like its competitor, the BMW i3, the G-Code, if ever produced, will be another step toward the future of cars.
What do you think? Should they build it?
