Mercedes aims to change the face of powerful all-electric cars with the EQS AMG. Power numbers TBD, but will be impressive.

AMG likes to get their hands on pretty much every Mercedes model out there. Their most recent addition will be the EQS AMG, according to a report from Electrek. AMG’s high ranking engineers are reported to have said that their skunkworks are going to look at a high performance version of the all electric sedan.

Electrek specifically says “It will be equipped with a dual-motor setup providing more than 600bhp and 663 pound-feet of torque” according to one senior ranking Mercedes engineer.

What isn’t known is what exactly AMG plans to do with their version of the car. Will they have their own motor or battery pack? Will we see the engine motor builder‘s name on a plaque in the car? It would be interesting to see what AMG also does in terms of looks. These photos from Mercedes still show a pre-production version, but for AMG, they could really go wild with the styling.

When it comes to competition, one name seems to be repeated for EV cars. While there’s no indication that AMG will try to take Tesla’s “Ludicrous Mode” to heart and create their own version, we’re confident that there will be no shortage of speed. After all, 600 horsepower is just the reported number, and when this model finally comes out, it could very well be more. Where the Mercedes will surely excel is in the area of quality. Here, though, the Mercedes will have to go up against the might of Porsche. Stuttgart’s gold-crested powerhouse, the Taycan, will surely be crossed shopped in this segment. In order for the AMG to succeed, it will have to level up against that home-country rival first.

It’s no surprise that AMG will be using electricity as a performance enhancer. The E53 already uses some zap to enhance its performance, but even the SL73e will use batteries to stay a range topping model. Even the AMG ONE will lean heavily on electric motors to assist in its dynamics. There is no denying that an all-electric AMG will be missing some of the appeal of the brutish AMG’s of yore, but this is simply a change for the better that we’ll all eventually come to accept.
