Mom/son duo never expected to come home in a brand new silver Mercedes-Benz GL after a day of sporting fun.

If you don’t believe in luck now, you might by the end of this story. In Pomona, New York (a town near the New York-New Jersey border), a woman is the owner of a brand new Mercedes purely by happenstance. And it never would’ve happened if her son hadn’t won a reading contest sponsored by a local baseball team.

The news story leaves out a lot of details, but this is what we know: Last school year, Pam Raines‘ son won a reading challenge held by the local pro baseball team. The Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League gave the Raines family free tickets to a game. On August 21, they went to cheer the team on and entered the “Hit The Star – Win A Car” contest. Sponsored by the Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet, the dealer presents the winner of the contest with a brand new Benz, should someone hit a home run that hits the Mercedes sign. Luckily for the Raines’, that’s exactly what happened.

Thanks to Infielder Mikael Mogues’ home run, they’re owners of a new silver Mercedes GLC. For Mercedes of Nanuet, this is the first time it has given away a car in the contest’s three-year history.

So Raines’ son signs up for a reading contest sponsored by the Boulders and wins. Then, a few months later, they decide to go to a game. They sign up for a contest. And for the first time ever, a player hits the Mercedes sign in the outfield. How’s that for luck?

As for the moral of the story, according to Raines: “You should always read books!  We just decided to go, it was a great shot, and we are really excited to be a part of this whole experience.” Mercedes is known for their legendary reliability. Here’s hoping that Raines keeps her new SUV for years to come. And when the time is right, hopefully, she’ll let her son drive it.
