G-Wagen Gets Some Powerful Updates

The G-Wagen is still one of the toughest off-road SUVs you could possibly find. Its military roots and legendary ability to just go anywhere combine to make it truly astonishing. However, in the last few decades, the G-Wagen has become more than just a capable off-roader, it’s become a lifestyle truck that suits the rich and famous.

With that in mind, Mercedes has offered everything from super plush versions, to the ridiculous G-Wagen 6×6, for those more desertly inclined. However, the G-Wagen is finally starting to show its age, and Mercedes is doing its best to fix that before they finally release the new version.

Mercedes is now going to offer a host of new engines to help better get the G-Wagen in line with the times. That all starts with the very recent, but already ubiquitous 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 found in both the C63 and AMG GT lineup. That engine in this guise will be good for 422 horsepower and 450lb-ft of torque. There will also be a new G63, which will use the E63’s 5.5L twin-turbo V8, good for 563 horsepower and 561lb-ft of torque.

As for now, these engine changes are for the euro only G-Wagens, but since a huge amount of AMGs are sold here in the States, I wouldn’t be surprised to see one romping down the streets of Beverly Hills sometime soon.
