We Hope You’re Still Doing These Simple Automotive Repairs

For those of us proudly owning a Mercedes (or any make) out of warranty, it’s easy to be a bit concerned about the cost of servicing them. It’s not cheap, no doubt, but there are still things you can do at home without breaking out a micro-processor to your OBD port.

Some of these repairs, like main battery replacement and various bulbs around the car, are easily done with simple hand tools that just about any owner should have in their garage. In most cases, the light bulbs and battery in a Benz are a breeze to replace, and changing filters and fuses usually is just a matter of undoing a clip or two. Getting a little more involved, you’ll see that you’re quite capable of replacing the serpentine belt yourself, which I did in a DIY article a few weeks back on my CLK. As a bonus, that article even includes step-by-step directions for changing the upper drive pulley.

When it comes to getting a bit more involved, such as changing brake components, you’ll have to make sure you have the right tools to complete the job, but it often remains simple and straight forward. Replacing fluids and your engine oil might require you to get a bit of dirt under your nails, but we have confidence that you’ll do just fine there too. And if you think I’ve left out spark plugs, let me tell you that on some Mercedes, spark plugs become a bit of a chore.
