Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door: Insanely Fast, Family-friendly

By -

Why would M-B make the AMG GT 4-Door when the super sports sedan AMG E 63 exists? Four doors doesn’t mean less fun.

Let’s pretend that you own a Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe, but just got married and are expecting your first child in less than a year. You love your GT Coupe dearly and the thought of selling or trading it in breaks your heart into a million pieces. Having no rear seats, the coupe just won’t do the job for the family man or woman. Luckily, Mercedes-AMG have thought of this exact scenario and have built the AMG GT 4-Door. As the name suggests, it’s basically a four door version of the AMG GT Coupe. Henry Catchpole of Carfection takes one for a spin to see if this is the super sports sedan for you.

We know what you’re thinking. Why would Mercedes make the AMG GT 4-Door when the another super sports sedan already exists – the AMG E 63 S. Taking a wild guess, it’s most likely because Mercedes have taken a page out of Porsche’s book, looking at the success of the Panamera, what many like to consider to be the four-door 911. Did Mercedes take a gamble with this new model? Absolutely. Will it be a huge hit? Only time will tell.

AMG GT 4-Door paves its own way against the competition.

Using the same MRA platform as the AMG E 63 S, the GT 4-Door does have some differences that sets it apart. For one, the GT 4-Door in 63 S trim makes 630 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque from AMG’s 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 via 9-speed automatic gearbox. That’s 27 more ponies and 37 more pound-feet of torque than the E 63 Sedan. Secondly, the aesthetics of the GT 4-Door are definitely an acquired taste. You’re either going to love it or hate it, but all looks are subjective right?

While you might not notice the slight difference in power between the two models, you’ll definitely notice the difference in performance when driven hard on a winding road or perhaps a road course. The GT 4-Door may be able to put down fast laps times, but it doesn’t mean it’s not fun if you want to hoon about on the way to pick up some groceries. Is the AMG GT 4-Door worth the extra $50,000 more than the AMG E 63 S Sedan? We guess that depends on what you prefer to have in your garage. The all-around performer that is the E 63 or the four door version of your favorite sports coupe that you’re eventually going to have to part way with so you can fit baby seats in the back? Pick your poison and let us know on the forum!
