‘Silver Echo’ Speedster Is a Fitting Tribute to Sterling Moss

Though it is just a rendering, the Silver Echo showcases what an updated 722 SLR might look like to honor the late Sterling Moss.

On April 12, the world lost a truly great racing driver. Sir Sterling Moss was 90 years old when he passed, but leaves behind an incredible legacy as a Mercedes racing driver. As the pilot of the infamous “722” SLR Mercedes, Moss is recognized as one of the greats. In fact, Mercedes own SLR Speedster was named in his honor.

After hearing of the news, one artist decided to pay an updated tribute to Moss. Costas Phouphoullides, a professional car designer, has put together this rendering according to AutoEvolution. Named the Silver Echo, this speedster is based on the AMG GT, but you’d almost never guess it.

Silver Echo

Dramatically different styling front and rear of the Silver Echo leaves no trace of the AMG GT. Considering the rakish styling of a no-windscreen Speedster, the sharper lines and angles are welcomed. There are, however, still some ties to the past. Exhaust exits out of the fender gills, and an ever so subtle intake port sits at the driver’s right headlamp. Out back, you get one full width taillight adding to the car’s wide and hunkered down appearance.

Phouphoullides himself has said, “Sir Stirling Moss and the cars he drove have been huge influences on my career,” according to his post on Behance. “Just as 2009 SLR Stirling Moss was based on the then Mercedes Benz Halo SLR; I have chosen to use the current halo of the range; the AMG GT,” he adds.

The rendering from Phouphoullides was done out of admiration, as his designs are currently on Volvo, Bentley and Ford products, Autoevolution says. However, we say if anyone from Mercedes or AMG is looking out, we’d stamps our seal of approval on this design in a heartbeat.

Still, it is great to see someone making such a tribute to one of the great Mercedes drivers. Moss famously won the 1955 Mille Miglia road race in a 300SLR. Each entrant for this 1000 mile race was released from the start line in one minute increments, and given a car number based on their start time. Moss’s race began at 7:22 am. And from there, a legend was born.
