Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Drifting

After all the data were gathered and the numbers were crunched, Autocar Magazine determined the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and Audi R8 were the best cars for drifting. After they picked their favorite driver’s/drifter’s cars, the drivers themselves began to compete for the title of “best driver/drifter”. Autocar gathered greats from the worlds of racing, R&D, automotive journalism and even the drifting world to see who could generate the biggest slip angles, and subsequently the biggest smiles from onlookers. You’d think world drift champion Mauro Calo would have come out on top, but you would be wrong. Calo ended up placing third out of the nine contenders, losing to a Autocar presenter Steve Sutcliffe and Aston Martin GT racer Darren Turner, who left his competitors behind as though they were driving on rails. Perhaps Turner should consider a career where more oppo-lock is involved.

It would be nice to see this turned into a yearly competition done comprehensively in the vein of Motor Trend’s Best Driver’s Car battle. If there is another drift challenge like this, I nominate the Stig, as well as EVO Magazine’s Richard Meaden and Jethro Bovingdon. I would also like to see how my all-time heroes, Chris Harris and Tiff Needell compare with some of the best in the world … I worship those last two so much, you may see me form new religions around them.
