2006 C55 Navigation question

Does anyone know if you can get updated Operating System OS software for the navigation? My friends BMW M5 just got his OS updated and it's much better. Anyone know if MB does that?

MB does that too but it would not introduce a whole new device, some small improvements and bug fixes.

An example on the W211:

Do you mean the BMW being a lot better than your navi or do you mean that it became a lot better than it was before the update?

Well what I meant on my friend BMW is that he updated the OS on this navigation unit and it added features and views that he didn't have before thus it was better than before the upgrade.

Just curious if MB did something like that.

Depends what is "something like that" but the link showed how the ETA display was added to the W211, I think the destination entry by coordinates was also new.

For the W221 MB added TMC (dynamic navigation) for the US market (has been available for the Euro models) and the bird's eye view mode. Likely some more (can have a look at the W221 forum).

I don't see these being dramatic improvements but significant anyway.

The question is not whether MB improves COMAND over time, but whether you can improve you current COMAND with a software upgrade, preferably done by the user with a new DVD.

The answer is no, as a rule. Occasionally there will be a service campaign to fix a bug that reflashes the COMAND and introduces new features. My '06 S class had one to fix a bug and made some trivial changes. More significantly, there is talk on the W221 threads that early '08 COMANDs can be updated to late '08 standards, with bird's-eye view, real-time traffic and DVD playback with only a software update. There is some confusion about whether it is applicable to '07 S and CL-class cars.

But these are exceptions. Normally, the only updates available from MB are new map and POI databases.

I assume it is equally rare on a BMW that the SW update brings really new features (minor or more significant).

My '05 W220 COMAND displays bird's eye view; it's likely that slowrey's will as well. It's in the display options menu.

TMC must be new to the W221. It's definitely not on my U.S. spec car.

I assumed that the new bird's-eye view is not the same as our 3D view. I happen to prefer 2D anyway (the other views are gimmicky, in my opinion), but I know that the bird's-eye view on Lexuses is very different than the W220 3D view. The perspective is from a higher vantage and seems more dimensional (and gimmicky). Can someone with an '08 confirm what bird's-eye looks like? Is it called 3D?
