Question New SLK280 owner with Command-Phone-Nav

Just bought my 2008 SLK280 and I love it (have always been a BMW fan with a 745 and an 88 635csi). I want to add bluetooth and navigation if possible but the dealer has been very vague. I am told that "the P1 package doesn't have the cradle and completer" in my car. I was told I need the core kit and completer (UHI??MHI?) I would love to know the exact parts I need to get the bluetooth puck to work. I saw some parts on Ebay that seemed to be what I needed. My car does have the SOS installed if that helps.

I have also noticed there are many HDD command systems with navigation and DVD based systems. Originally I was told my command wouldn't support navigation, now today the dealer said with a nav processor and drive in the trunk it would. I don't even know the partnumber for the Command installed (can I get that through the menu without pulling it out and looking at the sticker?)

I would like to have the navigation and bluetooth working. Any help? I am very technically literate (ran a custom computer company for a number of years building power systems and have added aftermarket to my BMW's no problem). Any help in pointing me where to start?

Thanks in advance

This is a great place for a new Mercedes owner to be aware of.

You can obtain free access to the entire USA spare parts system.

And, by paid subscription to the entire service procedures system.

In the service procedures system, you can find "retrofit" instructions for things like phone, NAV, etc., and usually these instructions list the part numbers of the kits required. These are the same instructions the dealer will use.

For $18 you can subscribe for 24 hours, which will be time to find and download what you need. Have plenty of printer paper.

While you're at it, you can look up all the technical bulletins for your car, recalls, etc. Nice to have so you can ask dealer to fix under warranty if there's a problem your car has.

Your car is called R171.

Thanks for the site. Would this show where the NAV DVD drive would go? I am assuming it is in the trunk on the panel on the far right side. I looked back there and I see a big open space with a couple plugs just sitting there. Could it be I had NAV and the prior owner pulled the drive to sell that before he sold it to me?

WIS would show where the Navi processor is and how it should be installed. On an R171 the Navi unit would be at the back panel at the centre in the trunk.

Parts (I believe)

With all the assistance and various postings I believe I need:
1) BQ682-0906 Core install
2) BQ682-0915 Completer Kit
3) MHI Cradle??? BQ6820925?? (is this what the blue tooth plugs into, the "dongle"?
**I see some reference I might need a mic BQ4820122

And are these all dealer parts or is there a better option?

Enter those part numbers (without B) here and see how you like the prices compared to your dealer. These are Mercedes dealers selling online.

If your car has teleaid, you probably have a mic, but please double-check.

"MHI cradle" is a phone holder for a Motorola V60 and there is indeed a "puck" that fits that. The more modern way to go is just to get the latest Bluetooth puck only (the silver thing). See both in attached photo (ML but same concept)

You don't really need a core kit or completer kit as you can buy the items separate and they will be cheaper. The kits were a little more useful when the only option was cradled MB phones. You do not need the linear compensator antenna or the brackets since you can just Velcro them down and bluetooth phones can't use the antennas.

You can get away with

q-6-82-0967
203-820-05-11
6-7-87-5878
211-540-31-32

for the phone. I can get you prices and info on the nav later I can't remember the nav info off the top of my head, but your car doesn't use a HDD based command.

Question New Question

Now I have the MHI module, cradle and fiberoptic connection and my car does have the teleaid mic. My only real final problem is with the cradle. The cradle plug doesn't seem to perfectly match the car's plug. In the console I have a blue receiver plug and a black. The black plug does line up perfectly with the cradle plug but I don't believe this is the proper plug because there is only 2 wires coming out of this receiver plug. The blue receiver plug (which is identical execpt the large "key" slot is in the second position instead of the first position with the black receiver) has the 10 or so wires coming off it. Any experience of what I am talking about here? Wrong cradle? Do I have to pull the wires and move them from the blue to the black plug (and if so what order)?

Hmm, this seems odd.

I have a 2007 SLK350, and am also getting bluetooth put in. My MB dealer said I need these three.

BQ682-0965 - Vehicle Core Kit - $110.00
BQ682-0964 - SLK Completer Kit - $160.00
and
BQ6-787-5878 - Bluetooth Puck - $493.00

You're ***-0915 part number below has been replaced with ***-0964 and is $160.

However the BQ682-0906 you have listed is the Vehicle Core Kit, but is $1,100 bucks. You might wanna ask why they want to use that kit instead of the BQ682-0965 which is only $110.

Hmm, did I get a wrong quote? Does anyone know what is included in BQ682-0965? Are they different?

Just got off the phone with the service department to double check. He says the parts I have listed below are all that is needed for bluetooth in a 2007 SLK350 with "Phone Pre-Wiring".

Todd, did you ever get this work done? What was the cost? and was the parts list accurate?

I just bought a '07 myself prewired and was looking to see what I needed...

Yep, got the work done and love it. I can't tell you if I got a decent deal or not but it cost me 900 for the Bluetooth puck, MHI module (that goes in the trunk on the panel), the Fiber optic link (MOST) and the dongle that connects in the compartment between the seats. Works like a charm, you don't need any bracket because the MHI will screw right down on the panel, just needed to buy a couple screws that fit. I bought the parts from a private dealer who used to work at a Mercedes dealer and is now private. If you want the name PM me and I'll send it to you. Took it into the dealer for the Star programming and it comes up in the display now and the steering wheel buttons work.

I just also completed installing navigation. Found a Nav processor on Ebay for 350, bought the clamp, trim and MOST online. Plugged it all in and also works. All I need now is the IPOD kit. Love my SLK!

Hi, I am not technically inclined at all and I have been trying to get the same stuff turned on in my 2008 SLK 280 for over a year now, my local mercedes dealer is not helpful at all. First it was that the buttons have no functions and are just there for decoration, then they said it could be done but would cost almost $2000. Then it was something only a mercedes dealer could install, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and start researching if this could be done and what I would need to do it. Thats when I ran across this thread. Could you tell me what exact parts you purchased to turn on your telephone and Nav system in your 2008 SLK280? I really appreciate your help, thanks-
Sam

cellguy@live.com helped me with the bluetooth parts. I would have to look them up but it wasn't very hard. I did have to go to the dealer for them to program the steering wheel buttons but they didn't charge me for that.

For the navigation, you can use a number of dvd navigation processors. There is a star bulletin on the internet that gives you the instructions. dated april 2005 order p-i-82.85/431.

Parts should be:
Navigation processor bracket A171 545 30 40
Navigation liner panel a 171 693 09 91
Antenna splitter a210 820 24 89 (don't need if you disconnect teleaide ant)
Navigation Prcessor A220 870 35 89 (other models can replace this one and work depending on your vin)
most adapter cable B6 782 3549
screws M6X15 2
Screws M6X12 2
DVD map rom BQ 646 0206
Liner Panel (or cut your old one) A 171 693 04 91 9E30

All the wiring was there, just needed to plug them into the nav processor, command screen automatically worked, for the dashboard hud had to again get dealer to program. Again free with another service stop.

Not too difficult if you are a bit handy. Let me know if you still need the parts for the bluetooth and I will try to look them up for you. I love the addition, the dvd through ebay and other parts only ran me $500 for the complete OEM upgrade (I was quoted over $2K from the dealer as well).

Thanks! Im looking around for those nav parts now, and yes if you find the bluetooth info I would be very grateful! It is really perplexing that Mercedes would make it this hard to turn on features for buttons that they put in their own vehicles! Thank goodness for guys like you who know how to DIY, have you done anything else cool to your SLK?

I also installed the Ipod interface. That was simple as well but keep in mind this mod will disable the phono input in your glovebox. Ipod info will display in the hud display.

2008 MB SLK280
I too just acquired a 2008 MB SLK280 with the COMAND system including NAV, SIRIUS, etc. The original invoice for the car shows that it has accessory code 387:Phone system prewiring, but there's no cradle or connector in the center console storage. There IS an iPod adaptor there. So what do I need to install the cradle and bluetooth "puck" if that's the best way to go. All phone functions seem to be available through the steering wheel smart buttons and COMAND screen/button, but for a way to have it talk to my phone. Thanks much.

either get one out of the junk yard or replace it with a modern radio from Alpine.

Sorry , let me elaborate, your radio is a model year 05 -08 and changed in 09. it was designed for your vehicle at least 1 year before coming to market which was late 04, technically making your radio about 11 year old technology brick that plays CD and AM/FM well. The Nav system is an antique and will need a new DVD, somewhere around $279.

Your money will be better spent on something that fits your life style and ability of understanding technology. I would start off with what phone do you use, and if you want something as simple as Bluetooth then add the Navtv or mobridge part, if you want Nav, add the alpine nav system with the 6" display that is going for $699 at a lot of shops. Sure you will need other parts but it is current technology with the ability to grow with you for future options. Now if you are tech geek, look into a unit with HDMI and mirroring of your phone...

There is so many options out there. Personally I would replace it and quit throwing band aids at it. the wires won't be cut so you can always return back to factory and if you believe that removing the radio is really going to affect the resale value of the vehicle. just put the old antique back in if you get rid of it. Now I know that is my opinion, and not necessarily yours or what you want to hear, but I rather be a realist.
