Back Up - Navigation CD! How?

Hello,

Is is possible to back up/create an image of a Mercedes Navigation CD. I have two young kids and they are always messing around with the Navigation system. On time they pulled the CD out of the nav unit and damaged it, where I had to replace it. It is getting very expensive ~170 a pop. If I had a backup I could use that.

Any thoughts?

I believe you have to use a program called Alcohol 120 to copy them.

I did a backup (I think I used Easy CD creator) and use it. You can also store ISO image to tape or HD drive.

I do not believe that it's possible to copy protect. I should borrow a disk from my dealer to check possibility of back up.

OK, I am not sure what you mean that you don't believe it, but the 2004 discs have SecureROM copy protection as sunman indicated. So lack of belief hasn't changed that they are copy protected (as has been discussed here at MBWorld several times before).

I guess I am just missing the point of your post... could you help me out and elaborate?

thanks,

Must copy protection done with software can be simply bypassed by using MacOS 9/X or Linux. Not really sure about this particular one but thats how it has always been.

Wow, you must not have looked into copy protection much recently.

Oh yeah, and I think the latest disks are SafeDisk protected... I misspoke saying they were SecuROM. Or it could be something else. Regardless, it depends which hardware you have, because some hardware cannot duplicate the copy protection no matter what.

Uh, he wrote "CD" not "DVD" so I think what you wrote is not really applicable.

Could be wrong though.

And "copy protected" doesn't mean "cannot copy", it means "protected from copying" which just makes it more difficult to copy. Like "wheel locks" don't make it impossible to steal your wheels.

It isn't hacker size, so I do not want to make it so. Learn how to user network resources, and you will find an answer how to make a copy.

So now you're saying it _IS_ copy protected even though you didn't believe it is possible? Or what? I must be having a bad day or week because I really don't understand the points you are trying to make.

Oh well, it's really not that important, we know it is copy protected, and it was already outlined how to copy it.

guys and gals,

I was finally able to make a backup of my 1/04 Nav CD by Navtech.

1) Make an image file using Alcohol 120%
2) Select the Safedisc 2 option and burn image to HD.
3) Make copy of image via Alcohol 120% or Nero.
4) I have tried it in 2000 S430 and it seems to work.

Hi Powerlplyer, I tried as your method , and was unable to make an image file . After 96% the process froze, and I had to abort.

Are you sure it is the safedisc 2 option ?

Whilst the Navigation disc came with a July 04 vehicle, when one reads the Info file on the disc it is dated 19.08.03. Is your disc earlier or later than this version ?

You are funny. Do not mess up intentention to be copy protected and be copy protected. You can consider DVD copy protected because you need to use decrypter, or just CD, because you can't copy it using your VCR. Whatever, have fun.

What were the blanks you used? I just tried this for my 7/00 release disk and it didn't work. I also tried Roxio. Any tips?

Try Nero. For 00 disks Nero should work fine. You can get a trial version, do backup, and delete the trial.

back-up nav cd

just a little story about a local used car operation that sells alot of highlines with navigation, they also do big internet business, about a year and a half ago benzes started appearing in our service department with faulty nav systems, turns out that these people used nav discs that had been reproduced, benz sent out a tech bulletin warning of the hazards of using copied/reproduced discs, seems that if not made, or recorded the same way as originals, disc has a tendency to spin faster or slower than it should, my understanding was that if they are faster, they heat up the unit, and caused unecessary wear, so just be carefull when burning/duplicating your disc, why not just buy an extra off e-bay, or get friendly with your salesman and ask them to obtain one for you and give them 20-30 bucks

Back Up Nav CD

I was told today that the Teleatlas Disc Uses Dual Layer Technology therefore it needs a dual layer burner / reader with special dual layer CD's.

Has anyone tried or used this equipment to backup their CD ?

I don't think there is such a thing as a dual layer CD. There are dual layer DVDs, but no dual layer CDs. CDs are incapable of having more than one layer.

And about copying. Anything is copyable. Probably the best way to do what you need is to create a disk image. That way everything will be copied including hidden files, etc. If a drive (i.e. your car's nav, your computer) can read the info from the disk, then it can be copied. Something as simple as Toast can probably accomplish what you need.

What u need to do is:
Download trail version of clonecd from this link
http://www.elby.ch/products/clone_cd/

Create an image of the cd with the option "copy protected game"
Burn the image with the option "copy protected game"
This works -this is how i backup my cd's

You didn't understand. People do not do illegal copies. MB has sale for disks now, and it's the best place to buy (much cheaper than ebay or a dealer). People do backup of own disks, for example I keep original disks in safe place and use backup. I made mistakes in the past, when my son scratched an original disk and it went out of work, so I had to buy a new one. So, I use only backups after that. I do not believe in the story that head unit will be damaged, at least I was lucky and it works fine with backups for 9 months.
