Normal Temperature Range ("C) Reading
I just want to know if my C230's temperature is within the normal range. I am located in Los Angeles and it registers 95-100 "C (the needle is almost 3/4 from C to H). I am comparing it to my previous W124 that I sold 2 years ago, the W124 registered only 85-90 "C (needle is slightly above 1/2 from C to H). Is this normal? What temperature does your W202 have normally after driving for a period of time?
Pardon the double quote (") sign before the C, I don't know how to type the degrees symbol.
Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

it will be a lot more helpful if you can give an illustration of your temp gauge.
mine's position normally settles slightly on top of the 2nd to the last line upwards and goes up slightly when stuck in traffic in our tropical sun.
cheers!

My C43 shows the same level after a hard drive or in bumber to bumber traffic. It even gets a bit higher that the photo and closer to the upper mark. Would that be the 100°c mark?

My C240 (V6) rarely gets to that level, so I was a bit afraid the C43 was heating a bit. It did spew out water at the overflow pressure pipe in the beginning I had it, but that was because the pressure cap was just old. Changed that and now the engine has the right water pressure and no more water comes out

the read out that your gauge is giving is pretty normal. you should see mine when i'm stuck in Manila's famous traffic.
anyway, you just keep an eye on the needle for any funny stuff that might act up.

Same here , I feel better even if I will have the cooling system checked out next time my car is in for a service (some time this fall) especially anti-freeze concentration before the cold months of winter.

Just to let you know, it's entirely normal for the needle to approach 100 deg C in stop and go traffic, especially when the A/C is running. Otherwise, it usually hovers around what you have.

In my C180 I have similar readings in Hellas, during the summer. So I think there is no need to worry.
Additionally please note that the cooling system is pressurised (see below), so you can go over 100 degrees Celcius ( to 120 I believe ) without danger for the engine.
From Heynes manual we have the following info for c180, c200, c220, c230, c250:
pressure cap opening pressure :1,4 bar
Thermostat :
Petrol engines:
Opening commences :87 (plus minus 2) degrees Celcius
Fully open:102 degrees Celcius
Non Turbo diesel engines:
Opening commences :85 (plus minus 2) degrees Celcius
Fully open:94 degrees Celcius
Turbo diesel engines:
Opening commences :80 (plus minus 2) degrees Celcius
Fully open:100 degrees Celcius
I think this will help.

Hey anyone have the ohms range for this temp sensor to the dash temp gage? (not the outside temp from bumper sensor). I looked on the web and found this:
20 Celsius 2200-2800 ohms
80 Celsius 290-370 ohms.
My temp gage in the dash is always showing 20 Celsius higher, so it shows in the red during normal driving, kinda scary at first. I've replaced the temp sensor on the water pump (one-wire sensor & not the other temp sensor), have been driving with my hand held scanner viewing stored data (never goes above 95 Celsius on less than 90 F day temps) & to be more sure I use my temp gun after driving: Engine block temp is normal & no paint blistering, water pump casing temp is also normal & matches within a few degrees from the temp reading on my handheld scanner (which uses the two-wire temp sensor data). Radiator is full & clean & no leaks, themo stat is good, temp gage needle moves freely. Next step is taking out the cluster and doing an ohms test on the gage itself and wires.
