Clear Coat remedy?

Hi all,
I have a small bit of a clearcoat problem along the driver's side pillar...right above the middle of the driver and rear driver's door. A small area of the clearcoat is gone and starting to peel away. Is there any fixes, aside from repainting? Thanks!

I'm saying that there's no way to fix it. A body shop may be able to wet sand it a little and then put on new clear coat. If not, they will have to just repaint that area.

Yes, after a period of time. The clear coat protects the paint.

hey, apollo shouldn't charge much. maybe 150 at the most.

around 40-50 for materials (good paint) (quart of paint, primer and clear) and it should be fine. 30-50 for labour.
thats a fair price. (thats what my body shop would charge)
u could just ytake it to a small bodyshop. but make sure u cover up evthing and make sure they put plastic around the rest of the car before they paint or overspray nightmare will really suk. and make sure they dont' use OMNI paint. thats the cheapest and sukiest paint....

150 sounds about right for an inexpensive chain type body shop. My advise: Mask it off yourself.

Gdawg,

I am not sure if this is possible, however, couldn't you just go to a touch up paint website, and use the touch up clear coat, or clear coat pen to repair the clear coat issue?

I have the MB touch up sticks from the dealership. But, for some reason when i touch up my rock chips, the clear coat fades after a while and turns to a white color...strange?

DIY in paint is HIGHLY not recommended.. especially in such a large area and without a "pro" status.

clear coat in a can is aresol... it will "spit" sometimes.. ie. large chunks of coat onto the service and then it'll look bumpy and not smooth. plus to get a job done so that u cant tell its been painted, they gotta paint the ENTIRE panel so there is no seams. masking it urself would look horrible because either 1. there will be a thick seem where the masking tape is. or 2. it will look like overspray in the area where ur DIY clear coat ends and the original begins under. i used to work in a body shop and i tell u all shops use an compressed air gun.. so its smooth all the way... no "spitting" like aerosol. plus the clear coat is alot thinner and better quality than the ones from a can there it gives the "glassy shine"

if it really bugs you, i'd say spend the cash for a pro shop to do it. otherwise saving $100 will lead to $300 in repainting the whole panel after u screw it up with the aerosol.

good luck!

I didn't want to be the one to bum you out but I agree completely. If you want it done right, take it to a body shop and let them sand and respray the entire roof. If you try to do it yourself you will regret the results. If you want to save some money you can sand and prime the roof yourself and just take it there with all the trim pre-masked off. Just make sure you know what you're doing before you do it. Preparation is the key to a good paint job.
