Screeching sound at startup

Hi,

I have a 1994 C280 and it makes a loud, unpleasant screeching sound in the mornings when I start the engine. The sound lasts for 2 - 3 seconds and then stops. It doesn't happen every morning, maybe 2-3 times a week. The weather is probably 50-60 F overnight. Anyone have any guesses as to what I need to fix?

Thanks in advance!

You need to change your alternator belt most likely.

It's probably your serpentine belt (the one that snakes around the front of your engine). It sounds like it is slipping briefly when you start up the car. You may be able to tighten it, or it may need to be replaced.

I don't think I wouldn't spray any WD 40 on it though as that will increase the slippage by lubricating the belt.

It has an automatic tensioner so no need to tighten. To do the job right, get a new belt shock and a new belt. Use WD40 as a quick remedy. It will not stop the slipping, only the squeak.

hi, i am ignorant about cars and i have the same startup screeching problem. 1. Where is this offending belt? 2. How do i tell if it needs changing or tightening? 3. If it needs tightening, can i do it myself or do i have to get under the car or dismantle things? 4. If it needs changing how much would i expect to pay for a new belt?

Look forward to hearing your replies! Many thanks.

1- front of the engine, you can't miss it !
2- Look at it closely (inside of the belt) if it has deep cracks, change it. Nothing to tighten, it's self-adjusting with the tensioner.
3 - see 2
4 - A belt is about $30 and does not take much to replace. Beleive me, if it needs replacing, it's the best investment you can make. You don't want to know the damage and the $$$ if the belt brakes.
