S is for Summer driving, and W is for Winter driving.
Where I live, we have no winter, so it's always in S position

I'm in southern cali so my setting is always on S, but when I accidentally switch it over to W the engine drives really rough. Is that normal?

In the W mode the transmission starts out in 2nd gear And in S mode it starts out in 1st gear. Most people will use the W mode in winter to help with tire slip on snow or icy conditions, or older people will use the W mode for a smoother take-off from a stop and lighter shifts.
I can't see a relationship between the SW and the engine, except you start off in 2nd gear

Thanks PT... I'm learning more about my old 97 C-230 than my GLA.

It never hurts to learn.
With proper maintenance, these cars a basically bullet proof.
The main thing is to jump on any small problem that could result in a bigger problem down the road.
If the check engine light goes on, then check the engine (duh), don't just close your eyes and hope it will go away.
Some many people don't do that and when the car craps out, they can't understand why?
Happy motoring

Ha, ha... nope I may not be the most mechanically-inclined person on this forum but I never ignore the warning lights. I do, however, close my eyes when the bill from my mechanic is handed over to me. These german cars are fun to drive, but so expensive!
Maybe now I'll try some suggestions from you instead of handing everything over. Appreciate all your suggestions! Gonna go home and try that "computer reset" thing right now.

Well, good luck...If it doesn't seem to solve the problem. let me know and I will put on my thinking cap.
I live in Central America, and I do use a shop on occasion for specialty repairs. Our shop rates (not dealership), but with factory trained mechanics who went out on their own, is about $8.00 an hour, and these guys are really good. I understand the rates in the US are around $90.00 an hour and up.

Post W vs S mode

Reading the twenty years of thread on this topic some nine years after the last posting. I suppose this means my car and I are both very old.

Decades ago, folks mention that starting a car in second gear would make the car go faster defeating the purpose of winter mode....... something tells me these folks had not driven a manual transmission and perhaps did not recall the mechanisms of a ten speed bicycle. Try starting your car out in fifth gear, then fourth, then third, then second and then first. Most likely, you'll stall out in fifth, maybe in fourth unless you're a very talented clutch user. Start out in third or second, you'll find it much more difficult to get the wheels moving than when you start out in first.

That's the entire point of a gear. Just like on your bicycle. Start out in a high gear and it's quite difficult to get your fanny moving. Start out in first, it's easy.

Now let's apply that logic to the assertions of summer (or maybe sport) mode by these twenty some odd years of posts: winter mode starts you off in second gear so you don't spin your tires as easily. This makes sense because you're starting out in a higher gear than you would have if you started out in sport mode (or first gear).
