Very stupid question about 2000 C230k

Hey guys.

I have a question, when you put it in D you can push it to the left or to the right.

So when you push it to the left it goes from D to 4, then 3, 2, 1 and then back if you push it to the right.

What's this for?

I was hoping it was tiptronic but I don't think it is.......is it just lower gears (like 1 and 2 on other cars)? If so why are there 4 of them ?

Thanks.

You have a 5 spped electronic transmission. In D it goes through all 5 gears. If you click down to 4 it goes 1 through 4. 3 is 1 through 3. etc.

You're not? But I remember reading the manual and it said it's not tiptronic, or something.

So are you saying that at a light I just go down to 1 and then just upshift from there?

Your absolutely right, it's not called "tiptronic"

MB calls it "touch-shift" :p

yes, basically if you slap it left and hold it there, it will go all the way down to 1 (when you at a red light of course). Then as your going, slap to the right and your in the next gear. If you hold it to redline, it should automatically shift to the next gear for you to prevent damage to the engine or tranny. So if you want to hold it for maximum acceleration for each gear, just slap it all the way to 1st and let 'er rip.

also, if you driving at like 55mph, and u accidentally hold it left and downshift, it won't let you go over redline to, again, prevent damage to the engine or tranny.

Have fun, hehe

Thanks. But the other guy said if you keep it at 1 it stays at 1 (and if you put it on 2 it just shifts from 1 to 2). And you're saying that if I put it at 1 it will shift at redline for every gear ?

I am 99% sure that it will shift at redline once you reach it because it's to prevent damage to the important components of your car...not too good to over-rev the engine.

Yea, it will stay in 1st till u hit redline then it'll shift into 2nd and stay in 2nd till u hit redline and shift to 3rd, etc.

I know that awiner tried that on his AMG and it went past redline before he decided to shift up. maybe speedshift is different.

but from what i understand, if you have the old gated shifter, if you pass redline, you'll get a fuel cutoff after that.. if you have touchshift, it *should* upshift for you (and a fuel cutoff in case it doesnt?)

From the MB Website for 2000 W202

Transmission Driver-adaptive electronic 5-speed automatic. Driver-selectable winter mode starts vehicle moving in 2nd gear or a special second Reverse gear to help improve takeoff on slippery surfaces.

This dosn't realy answer your question. Have you checked your Owners Manual?

when i keep my car in 1st it doesnt automatically shift for me. it hits the rev limiter and the warning triangle light comes on. hitting the rev limiter caused my MAF sensor to go bad. stupidest $300 mistake i ever made.

Hmm...it really seems that it's a different situation with every member that has tried that. Some people who leave it in first and it will shift for them when it hits redline. Others, the tranny stays in first.
