All depends on the problem...I mean, it can take a few days at times. I had that once, the upshift delay problem...I reset the CEL by the battery method, didn't come back on after driving for a while. But a few days later, it came back, so it all depends on when the problem decides to throw a code again.

The light will come on NEXT time the problem occurs.

did you read the code that caused the cel to come on?
I have a CEL once a week now... P0400 the EGR valve low flow.... have been resetting it with the scan tool for past 4 weeks.... knowing what the cose is about is very important especially if you get a repeat code...

nope, took out the egr valve tested it, it works... dissassembled and cleaned the egr to intake manifold tube (was not particularily clogged actually)... this was last week... cel came on again yesterday... will check code tomorrow... if it is the egr code again then I will look into the vacum switchover valve that controls the opening and closing of the egr valve... it could be intermitedly sticking, causing the fault code... given the cost of these parts I'm gonna do a lot of troubleshooting before changing anything...

yeah mine is that p0505 error, idle air control malfunction, im gonna try cleaning more of the throttle body today. Is this a good way to clean it by starting the car and spraying some into the body so it cleans it better and probably cleans more of the oxy sensor as well?
