lowered springs or stock springs?

Hi guys,
Sorry if this may seem redundant (or if it has been discussed previously), but I need some input.
I am planning on putting some staggered 17s on my C280, and I would like to know if there's a noticeable difference in the fender gap using stock springs?
What is the cheapest option I can take to reduce this gap? Is changing pads the best route in tackling this? Also, if there is anyone who has pics to show me, the difference from stock set up (stock rims & all to 17s, lowered and not), I'd appreciate it.

Very noticeable. I just put H&Rs on with #2 pad in front and #2 in rear: Results
is almost a 1" gap in front and 3/4" gap in back. I'm swapping the rear pads this
weekend (if I get them tomorrow by UPS) to give a 8mm increase (so I'll end up
near 1.25" in the rear - which is ok for load and how the car lifts the front when punching it). I will post pics after the job and I have 17 x 8 running 225/45 all around - looks nice! I wanted 18s but here in Northern, VA, the
roads really stink - potholes and all.

i don't have the $$ for springs yet, so i am not sure if i should save for springs and get everything done (wheels & springs) together.

Stock setup is below (with my signature) with 16" rims. I was just informed the
pads I ordered won't be in until Tuesday the 26th. So, I may try the stock rear
pads with the H&Rs this weekend. Just to have something to do and I'll post some pics of that. You might be able to just put #1 pads in front and #2 in rear
to get the lowered look you're after (though it won't be as low as swapping the
springs - a lot cheaper.......). I actually thought about doing that first but ended up buying the H&Rs from TireRack (cheapest price, great service and
very fast delivery).

excuse my ignorance, but where can i get different pads? is this a dealer item only?
i will take note of your set up, and wait for your pics to see how they look.
also, does changing pads affect the ride?

I found them at mercedesshop.com I have the exact part numbers if you need
them. I don't think ride quality should change.

I just posted a pic on my ride. My buddy took the picture as my camera was on
the blink. There is a finger gap in the front and even less in the rear. I will swap
out the rear pads for the larger ones (17mm part number 2103250484) on Tuesday. I think after the swap, the gap will be the same front/back.
