There is a little knob right below the shift knob. Unscrew it I believe counterclockwise about one to one-and-a-half turns. Then, pull the knob straight up. Don't knock yourself out.

Easy DIY

If you need more instructions, i'll take pictures. It's real simple

Dont know about manual. For auto tranny, you have to take the base lever out first (by using a screwdriver, covered with towel, stick it under the chrome edge), then turn the knob anti-clockwise for 30 degrees or so & pull right up.

believe it or not, in some of the c-class (like mine), the cover comes off just by simply lifting it up. This is what MB called World Class Quality Control!

Not quite sure how I did it, but pulling up and towards me to put it into reverse did the trick. Very easy to put back on, though! Good thing I wasn't trying to impress anyone. I'd just pass if off as an "easy-access option".

Well, I'd pass it off as not being put on correctly from the factory.

I'd learn how to put it back on the right way, so that you don't end up with a surprise again when you go to put it into reverse, or even worse, into 6th at 75 mph!

Allen, what car do you have? If C230, do you have C7 pkg?

It would help clarify!

Sorry, don't know about the 240.

If they're attached, you'd probably have to swap out both the boot and knob, and not just the knob. Sorry, MB doesn't allow for easy swapping of their knobs on the current models.

I just put it back into place, applied direct/even pressure where the clips, or whatever you want to call them, fasten the boot back into the console, and then gave a light tap to the top of the knob. I'm not sure on the mechanics of what keeps the knob attached, but it has stayed put. There must be a way it locks itself, I suspect that it may be with a slight turn. It's apparently designed to be taken on and off with ease. I haven't had any problems with it since. That's all I can tell you, guess you've just got to try it?

I'm assuming, that is, if the 230 and 240 have the same mechanism.

backing into my garage last night, i learned how to remove the shift knob and boot. it was quite by accident. i pulled up on the knob, it flew off along with the boot. after looking at it, i figured it out, but not before giving the engineers at mb a few choice words. at least i gave them a piece of my mind in my head. what a super complex useless way to attach a stupid shift knob. why didn't they spend the time and effort on a one touch sunroof instead of the super tech shift knob???
