Can we adjust the clutch?

I have a question regarding the clutch on my C230k SS. it feels to me that the clutch pedal is abit too long compared to the short throw shifts. i didn't see any type of clutch stop on the floor, but is there anyway to adjust the clutch so that it stops sooner? with my bmw, it has a small clutch stop that comes from the factory, but that felt abit too long as well. i purchased the UUC Motorwerks clutch stop which was bigger and allowed the clutch pedal to stop sooner which completely changed the feel. i'm hoping i'm able to adjust it somehow. thanks guys

thats a good question, that was one of the first things i checked after i got the car. i replaced the stock clutch stop on my 323i with a bolt and rubber stopper for a couple dollars from home cheapo but there is no stock clutch stop on the 230. i did notice some kind of a rail and slider on the side of the clutch that maybe can be adjusted? i'll have to check it out again later.

There is no adjustment. The clutch auto adjusts.

As the 6spd manual is an absolute pig in terms of shift quality, I wouldn't say that clutch (pedal) travel is the problem.

Further more, messing with stops has consequences, if the clutch is not 100% disengaged, you will eat through the sync rings pretty quick and the shift quality will be even poorer. Happened to the wife's 5spd since PO didn't care to change fluid and bleed the clutch very often. In cold weather it's not even worth *trying* to downshift 3->2.

the only thing I dont like about the clutch pedal is its kind of long; to depress it all the way you have to extend your leg a lot. How does this self adjust work?

Is the sprint booster worth the money? because when i'm in my power-band I don't have a big problem with throttle response. Looking for a new mod though

I really like mine, though I'm used to my race clutch on the crx, so it may have something to do with that.

They've improved it so that it has three different levels: 1, OEM 2, small placebo, and 3, bigger placebo. I think of it as my car's Kim Kardashian - I know it's totally fake, but I really don't care as long as it does what it's supposed to. The only real way to know if it's for you is to try it, though.

I will now wait for Glyn and others to ethug me about wasting money on it.

When you press the pedal from its rest to the floor, the master cylinder will travel X mm. This causes a travel of Y mm on the slave cylinder. The return action of the slave cylinder, however, is not Y mm but Y plus a very small distance caused by the wear of the friction material causing the pressure plate to move ever so slightly closer to the flywheel.

The balance of hydraulic fluid in the system is sucked in from, or expelled to the reservoir.

So no matter how worn the clutch is, the master cylinder always need X mm of travel before the clutch disengages, and hence the pedal travel is always the same.

*that's* how a self adjusting clutch works. And by the way, the same goes for your brakes.

If only C230 coupes came with clutch kits! Sprint boosters dont seem like a bad investment, but for $250 there would be a couple of things I would go for before it.

I see how this works now, thanks for the clarification

Yes, a better clutch and lightened flywheel would probably do wonders for our cars.

you can spend the money on the sprintbooster and get the ecu tuned... You can do it like old school and remove the flywheel and have it shaved down. just dont shave it down too much or it'll be bad for the car.

I was wondering something about the ECU tune, can the stock ECU be tuned? Or do I have to buy a chip or aftermarket ECU like how honda has Kpro?

on a side note, took my car to replace a hose leaking coolant and unexpectedly it made my shifting so smooth. It shifts like butter! Its never been this smooth the whole time I had this car, feels brand new. Maybe transmission fluid was never being cooled properly?

No, they internally adjust the settings (more boost, fuel, etc). For Eurocharged, they can do it remotely with your laptop, I removed my ecu and shipped it to OE, which is a piece of cake. Or maybe one of the tuners is coming to your area, which would be even easier.
