Wheel Question...

On the new 05 C230 Sport Sedan it's got those nice looking silver 5 spoke wheels. Do those come in chrome? I thought I saw them before, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

There are a couple forum members here who have chromed their 5-spoke OEM wheels.
It only looks good with certain colors.
Someone actually said, that he got them like that from the dealer. Not sure if it was a used or new car.

I'm sure they'll post soon enough......

Thanks Saprissa. I thought I'd seen them at the dealer too, but this was before I wanted to buy a new Sport Sedan, so I wasn't really paying attention.

I got my chrome AMG Type 209 Style IV wheels at CEC in Los Angeles.
They look great on Brilliant Silver AMG Sport Coupé.
A lot of people at first told me that chrome would not look good on Silver,
but I went ahead with it anyway. Don't regret it one bit !!
I love the shiny new look ! It totally makes the car stand out....
all I get now are compliments ! So......... go for it !!!!

MB actually does chrome dipping on rims if requested when the car is first purchased. I was mad at my Dad cuz he did this when I bought the E class for he and my Mom. I personally don't like Chrome wheels, but to each their own.

You can't be serious! With half of these wigger mods I've seen posted in this forum, you're going to say something as assinine as having chrome wheels is almost like putting spinners on a car. Can any of you people comprehend that a chrome 5 spoke wheel is not something wild and crazy and gawdy like some "fast and furious" wheel? Almost every car we sell at my Ford dealership comes from the factory with a chrome wheel option. Are those spinners Vadim??? Our new Five Hundred has chrome wheels, the Mustang has a chrome 5 spoke option, the Taurus has chrome wheels, the F150, the Super Duty, the Thunderbird, etc. And in case you haven't noticed Vadim, Mercedes comes with chrome wheels from the factory too. Are you going to say the chrome AMG wheels are halfway to spinners? Give me a break.

Robby - don't take it so closely! This is just a personal opinion. You may as well ignore it, but it is not going to change. I hate chrome wheels (and wood trim of any kind), just like I hate gold neck chains.

Wow, we're total opposites! lol. I love woodgrain trim in a car. In fact, I can't stand that stainless trim (or whatever it's supposed to be) that looks so cheap on the new 230 Sport Sedan. I can't believe they changed from the carbon fiber for the sport models. I am actually thinking of putting woodgrain in place of it. I love the look of woodgrain with a black interior. And even though I like chrome wheels (with a mars red car), I don't like silver (or chrome or platinum or stainless) jewelry. It's gotta be gold. But not a lot, like a "guido". That's funny. Peace.

Did you guys notice that the same wheels are used in alot of muscle cars? I think Chip Foose use those wheels relatively often on TLC's "Overhaulin'"

My opinion..........

Personnally, Chrome rims give a car (any car) a taste of class. This is not 1/2 way to spinners by any means. Spinners are a fad, quick in, probably quick out.

Chrome rims, have been on luxuary cars for the longest time. Some of us are outta high school and college so we can remember when the painted silver/grey rims first came into style. Back in the day, you bought silver if you could not afford the chrome. Oddly enough, i was pricing out rims not so long ago.... still the same!

Also think back to the old school dayz... The caddi's, lincolns, benzo's, rollz, etc...... all chrome rims (and wood interior's, come to think about it) ALL CLASS! Mustangs, Civics, Cavaliers, Sentra's, Celica's... Silver 5-star wheels (and vynal interiors) Pinto's, Mavricks, Vega's, Gremlins... Hub caps (and plastic interiors. Camero's... non-matching wheels on blocks (and missing parts of interiors)

I do think that to go chrome or not to go chrome is a taste of personal preference.... but we are driving a mercedes, and 10-15+ years ago, these were mostly all top end luxury cars in the auto industry. So its nice to see people chroming out their rims even if they are 17" and not 19"

Many advantages over 17's.... #1. Rubber replacement #2. POTHOLE DAMAGE less likely #3. Smoother Ride.... disadvantage... side wall flex :-(

Just my 2-bits worth.. only an opinion

I think what's interesting is that none of the German manufacturers offer chrome wheels from the factory. Those that you see have been plated, or polished, here in the US by the dealer or other third party. I've heard that the chome plating process may actually weaken the wheel, thus making them illegal (unsafe?) in some parts of Europe. The wheels we get come painted silver, not plated. They can be painted any color, or just polished shiney, but evidently not chrome plated if you want to maintain the forging's strength.

I would have never guessed that! I was seriously considering taking my "C7" rims in for chroming. Sailor, do you remember where you read or heard this, i'm interested in reading up on that.

Saillorite, you have got to be joking when you stated that "I think what's interesting is that none of the German manufacturers offer chrome wheels from the factory. Those that you see have been plated, or polished, here in the US by the dealer or other third party." I know for a fact that you can order chrome AMG wheels and/or factory wheels from Germany.

Justinius - No, I don't have specific references, but the actual problem, as I understand it, is that the preparation and heat of the plating process degrades the molecular structure of at least the surface of the wheel. Also, I think you will find that often chrome plated wheels eventually leak air where the plating contacts the rubber of the tire (at the rim).
On the other hand, I think the US and Japanese manufacturers do offer chrome plated wheels from the factory. Somehow their process is OK. Or maybe the ones they offer are only polished, not plated.

This is not class, but old-fart bling-bling luxury attributes. Exactly the things I do not want to associate myself with (why making your car look like a "caddi" or "lincoln"?).

Wouldn't worry about accidently making your car look like a "old far bling bling caddi or lincoln, as your driving a c 230 coupe...

Only thing i was trying to say, is that CHROME RIMS have been around forever, and typically give luxury cars a bit more class.

Now obviously a C class coupe really does not have any luxuary or class, but chrome rims on it are not going to make it any "less" of a car, its all personal preference.

The way i see it, is the "c" coupe is like the Mercedes version of the CRX or MX3. So maybe dressing the car up with chrome and wood, would be out of place, but it may just make it a little nicer car as well. OR we could put on some cheesy aftermarket grey 5 stars, toss in some Purple Neons, Ricarro Seats, a ebay body kit, torch cut the springs, and add some NOS and pimp da bass on sat night. Either way, its our personal car, and it may make it a nicer car....

and an opinion is still an opinion.

Personally, I don't care for the chrome look either. There are some cases (like classics) where it is appropriate, but I just don't like it. It also may be from my experiences growing up, in the area I lived it seemed like only a certain demographic liked chrome wheels. Maybe subconsiously I connect the two.

But, if you like it, that's cool with me. To each his own.

If you do it right...is Class/Gangsta. If not...is F'ugly/Ghetto
The C230K stock wheels are Fugly/Ghetto when chromed...that's just my opinion!
