adaptation--good, or bad?

....After my wife gently drives the car around for a week, asking very little of it but to just get somewhere, I get to drive it....somtimes I have to floor it just to get it to creep out into traffic..after some aggressive, aggrivated throttle movements, response comes back and the trans uses somthing other than the highest gears. once it's awake, it's fine. Is mine screwed up?, or do they all start over relearning at start-up?

i say about 15-20 min's of driving,,,
leaving the gear in 1, and floor the crap out of it , let the computer shift to 2,3,4.. made my driving style aggressive... in like 2 minutes

From: Edmonds... good bye SD
its normal...

i typically drive in "W" (comfort/winter)... The first weekend i bought the car, I actually DROVE the car. Using "S", light turn green, the yellow exclimation was lighting up in first, second and third gear shift..

Now i pull up to a light next to a ricey car, put it in "S" and hit the gas... Its a nice soft acceleration, no tire slippage or yellow light. :-(... it was fun for the few days, but i don't like to beat my car, so i will just deal with the memories of a fast hard shift.

Too bad the computer didn't have a memory of a driver 1 or driver 2 style, one for screwing around, and one for daily driving.

As long as you're asking for opinions... :p

I hate it ... hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it ...
I've been known to say things like ...
I =hate= MB's "adaptation" program in the transmission ECU ... deep hatred! If you're not on the car all the time, it basically goes to sleep -- grandpa mode I call it. I =hate= it! Answer to that is to row the shifter. My tranni is in either second or third most of the time around town. [note: that was before the 5.4L motor swap]
OR
I seem to be posting this every few months .... thank MB for the worst piece of technology they ever thrust on their unsuspecting customer ... Transmission Adaptation ... They actually market it as a FEATURE that's GOOD FOR US! Ya Tanni Adaptation = Grandpa Mode if you're not "on" the throttle most all the time.
Hey, I own an AMG for a reason... I wouldn't mind it existing at all -- for those who like and appreciate that it exists -- if I could turn the bugger "feature" OFF ... but I can't, so I take every opportunity like this to spread my opinion ... who knows, maybe one day enough MB owners will do the same and we may finally get a little button equivalent to the "ESP" button in the dash, but this one turns off Tranni Adaptation ... (well, at least it would be useful for those w/o "M" mode in thier tranni ... )

Please deduct $0.02 from my account ... as long as you were asking...

..........Once I let a friend drive it, and he wanted to shift the car manually. He started in 1st, and drove it to redline, it went about 2 notches into redline before I reached over and nudged it into 2nd. I didnt think it was going to shift! How high will they wind before they decide to shift?! Or did mine just forget, like it forgets to go!

It will shift at redline, not before.

JDM....

Redline in the manual is 6200 rpm's but on the dash it is 6000... It will shift @ 6200 whether you are in are holding the shift in low gear or not.

Supposed to be fool proof...

The smart key, can be programmed to each driver? Seriously? thats cool! or does the smart key just remember stuff like seat position/mirrors/radio setting?

.........okay, so I panicked when it hit 6200 and the car must have shifted at the same time I rocked the selector..good to know. At the time I could not believe that sophisticated as these are, it would let you smoke the engine..

And RICK,
....lets hear more on that smart key..it's programming includes adaptation setting? ?

Yes....read your owners manual....
Smartkeys used by diffferent drivers can adapt to things like driving styles of the individuals, central locking controls (ie: drivers door or all doors open with one touch), climate control and seat settings (if you have the power seats).

As I said...RTFM

...........If you feel it's a waste of your time to discuss this, dont. I have read my manual, and perhaps I overlooked where it said the keys will call up the individuals driving styles. The car seems to constantly re-learn. My wife drives the car very softly, with her key, I am more aggresive. Even after she has driven the car, with her key, it drives the same with mine, until I wake it up. It does not resume my mode because I used my key.

On the contrary, I think manual mode SHOULD let us smoke the engine. It's all about control. For example, if I'm cruising at 4th gear on the highway in manual mode and then floor it, the transmission can still downshift even though I'm holding it at 4. As stated in the manual, the number set in touchshift mode is simply a maximum gear it will go in.
