that is correct, 99.9% of the time. note that there are dealers who have used
Ebay to sell new, to-be-programed-for-the-first-time, keys. but it's quite ap-
parent that these are new keys and priced accordingly. Anyone selling MB
keys, previously owned, are just waiting for some uninformed buyer to come
along.
the following is from E series CD but appropos for other models as well....

Well, I can think of one use for a previously used key - as long as it's a three button version. A person could swap the guts out of a key for a coupe or wagon and get the functionality of opening the tailgate with the key, but that's the only use it would serve as.

Update: went down to the dealer and picked up the key today, it is slightly larger than the old-style key but i can deal with it, it just feels good to have something thats somewhat fresh out and not many people have seen, it makes me feel like i just bought a new car, for $118...what a bargain!

4 wheeled car.
Surely, but once I get it working for sure. My dealer said "Mercedes is just gonna bump the order back when they see that its not the correct car" I told them that I'd eat the 70 some dollars if it were true. Once I get the key and that all is good I'll reveal the name. It's a small *** dealership so I dont want them to get swamped with something they cant even get right..just in case

My New Key
I just ordered my key from Mercedes Benz of West Chester (Ohio). Below are the wholesale and list price of the key and the blade.
Smart Key
List $180.60
Whsl $112.00
Blade
List $3.90
Whsl $3.50
The parts guy told me that Mercedes had the key priced incorrectly for a while. That is why many people got their keys for $50-$70 (through Feb). My dealership ended up getting back charged for the many keys they sold at the incorrect price. He told me they are still fighting Mercedes on paying back the difference.

Resurrecting this thread...but bit the bullet & picked up the new key from OEMpartsdirect for $118 shipped. I know I could've had it for under $80 shipped back in Jan/07, but was humming & hawwing since Jan/07 b/c of the inconsistencies of required proof of ownership by some and not others. The price went up in Feb/07.
OEMpartsdirect or Hammersley is a legitimate MB dealer in Virginia, their new standard policy is proof of ownership everytime and that is consistent with other dealers that have been in contact with.
