BRAKE Pad, Rotors, & Calipers Discussion Thread (OEM, aftermarket, etc...)

MBWorld Fanatic!
Same thing happened to me when I ordered an EBC setup. The rears arrived great- the fronts were just OE pieces that had been CAD plated. I returned them and got all of my money back, including shipping. They are advertised as being slotted/dimpled- but that's certainly not the case.

Advanced Auto has Friction Master
I went to the local Advanced Auto and asked for ceramic pads for my 2006 C230.
He pulled up a set of Friction Masters for $49.99. But they were not in stock.
I ordered them and they arrived the next morning.
I put them on the car yesterday and I'm looking forward to dust free wheels.
Easy to install and came with the shields in the box.
I'm pretty happy about the whole thing. 39K miles on the car.
I just wanted to share.

i ended up doing the same thing (friction master) from advance auto parts...they work great especially with brake lines!

love them! combined with brake lines they respond great! almost no dust at all...basically I've had them on for over 2 months and no need to wash them yet! and they are perfectly comparable to the akebono that I have on the rear!

Thanks for the feedback on the Friction Masters. My MBtech stated that my fronts are 20 percent, so I plan on replacing the OEM with the FMs. Could you please reply with a part number.
my car is an 07C230SS with the bigger calipers up front.
thanks in advanced

Glyn, my OEM pads are getting close to being done, so I have been searching high and low for pads. I have read many reviews and researched materials, and read every single page of this thread. So with that said, IMO if you can live with the brake dust, stick with the OEM pads. They really are great pads with incredible initial bite, excellent performance, and reasonable price, but have 2 distinct disadvantages: 1)BRAKE DUST. 2)They are pretty darn abrasive to rotors. I have also finally found who makes the OEM pads for MB on at least the 2005-2007 cars. The manufacturer is Jurid. The OEM pads are a very low metallic content pad.
If you can't live with the dust of the OEM pads, go with one of the leading brands of ceramic. Ceramics will dust significantly less, produce less noise, and are much more rotor friendly. BUT, even the best ceramic pad will not be able to match the OEM pads for initial bite. IMO, that trade-off in bite, is worth the less dust, rotor life, etc. In fact, most will generally prefer to not have such an aggressive bite as the OEM pads have.
Semi-metallic pads will perform similar to ceramic, but will dust more, be more prone to noise, but are cheaper than ceramic. IMO, ceramics advantages over semi-metallics, are worth the extra cost. Ceramics are quickly replacing semi-metallics in the industry.
I have decided to go with the Akebono Euro Ceramics for my car. The Friction Master's, and Morse should perform similar at a lower price. The Akebono's are now readily available for 2005-up C-class and are priced about the same as OEM pads.

Thanks John - I love the OE pad performance. I'm on my second set. But man I've had enough of the dust. Everybody tells me to go Porterfield. I appreciate your input.

The Porterfield's are a great pad too. Just think they may be overkill for most and not sure if they are worth more than double the price of the Akebono's? They also seem to dust much more than ceramics, but less than OEM.

a quarter mile at a time
I know i sound like a broken record but I think EBC pads are garbage. Tried them and hated them
Just to throw in my $0.02, I too agree that the stock jurid pads perform the best as far as initial bite and overall performance.
I've personally tried EBC Redstuff pads for 15,000 miles and hated them.
Recently switched to Akebono Euro Ceramics on all 4 corners and I'm pretty happy with them. Amost a dust-free pad. Good initial bite and performance and I really have little to be unhappy about.

quick question guys...is there a consensus on here if the 04.5 SS have a sensor in the rear or not. whatever website i look at it gives you a choice of either with the notch or without. As of right now hawk ceramics are going on the front with zimmerman rotors, any opinions?.
im just confused about what to get for the rear??

Caliper noise
Hi
My W203 C180 has a noise coming from the front left wheel. When I depress the brake pedal slightly the noise goes off. I suspect its something to do with the calipers.
What is the easiest (cheapest!) way to settle the problem?
Thanks
