I have Porterfield R4-S pads on my car. Got them from Geoff at SpeedToys.com. The MB pads are not on their website because they sell ricer stuff so you have to e-mail them or call. You can order them directly from Porterfield in Costa Mesa, CA but you'll pay more. Also you can get EBC Greenstuff pads from Tirerack.com (they are on their website).

Not to sound like a broken record but Geoff can get you the Porterfield cryo-treated cross drilled rotors too. Don't have those but when I need rotors I'll probably get them.

not sure on those pads kompress. But a better set or rotors (slotted or cross-drilled) will keep the rotors cooler and help prevent warping, and a set of low-dust pads wll keep the whels clean.

I brake hard on the street and on the dragstrip and I've had no warpage problems with Porterfield.

Could be, but the EBC pads are cheaper and you may be able to get cross drilled rotors + the EBC pads for the price of the Porterfields. I know Porterfied wanted about $179 just for front pads unless they dropped their price recently. Also EBC is touting a new reformulated pad that may fix the woes of past pads. I lucked out an got the Porterfields for $100 but I don't think I would have gone that direction for $179.

Buellwinkle, was that $88 for the pair or all around? I know, wishful thinking...

Do many folks here do their own work? The only reason I am so willing to bring the C in is b/c it is under warranty. Otherwise, I generally feel safer doing the work myself for minor to moderate work. At least I know it was done.

xc240x, what is the labor-parts breakdown for the rotors and pads? Just being nosey...

Brake pad questions

Hi all!

Hope all is well with everyone.

Took my car in service and my brake bads are down to 20% after only 14,000 miles. OK, given that I live on a hill in SF, is this normal? It seems so soon to me.

Also, since I need to replace the pads soon, is there any reason to go to Midas or some other place that offers lifetime pads?

TIA

Beth

The stock MB pads are very soft, so they do wear quickly. I don't know anything about Midas pads. Mnay people here have switched to Porterfield pads which are high performance pads, but they don;t make a lot of dust. They are fairly expensive compared to other brands. Also, Pagid and Mintex make good low dust pads.

190 2.3 and C320
That's just about right for front brake pads on M-Bs. In fact, driving on the hills of San Francisco, I think you're doing pretty well. ( I had to replace front brake pads on my M-B 190 every 11-15,000 miles. I'd be careful about aftermarket pads damaging the rotors. I believe your rotors are made to work best with the OEM pads.

A friend got 18k miled out of his brakes. Depends on if you do you driving on Freeways or city streets. Get the Porterfields, they'll last you 2-3 times longer and way less dust. They are pricey at about $150 but you won't need so many brake jobs. My dealer put them in for $48 and gave me a loaner so that was a better deal than Midas to me.

Call Geoff at Speedtoys.com, they'll drop ship it from Porterfield in Costa Mesa and you'll have them in 2-3 days.

What about the sensor location on the OEMs; do the porterfields have that also?

No sensors, tie wrap those out of the way, do not disconnect the wire. The brakes last so long that you don't really need them. By the time they wear out I figure they'll have the sensor available. There may be a way to drill a hole in the middle of the pad and put the sensor in.

My car has 20,500 miles and the pads look fine. I would estimate that they will last at least 40,000 miles. Almost all of my driving is highway.

I inspected them yesterday when I removed my C7 wheels and installed my new C240 wheels with Eagle RSA tires. Just in time for yesterdays 1/2" of snow.
