Now how about removing the star completely and having just pewter slats with chrome edging! That's what I'm planning to do anyway...

If you're not sure where to get one, I know a guy who custom makes them for coupes.

hmmm.....not so sure about this CL grill without the star on it. it might take some time to get used to it. I must say that it makes the car have clean lines. the pewter color with chrome trim does like nice though.

Have you ever seen the Expression grille, how the bottom has a fiberglass bar that you have painted body color and makes the grille look slimmer? I think I'll have the bottom slat fiberglassed into a rectangle shape and painted pewter so it looks like part of the hood surrounding the 3 slat grille.

Yes, I have seen the expression grille. Your idea does sound interesting and possible. If it turns out nice, maybe you can market it!

I have no intentions of marketing it. Mine will be a one off.

Anybody know how to remove the star on the Expression grille? I want to remove it before bringing it into the shop for painting, but don't want to break it.

I searched, but it seems that everybody has gotten the grille with the star on and/or the formymercedes is not attached when delivered.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try prying it off?

Blake, didn't even see this reply. Yeah, I tried, but some of the star seems to be glued in and I didn't want to risk breaking it (since the grille is expensive).

Anyways, I just gave it to the bodyshop and asked them just to not paint the crome star.

Also, does anybody have any pics of how they clipped the upper portion of the grille? I have an idea of what I'm going to do, but if somebody already had some success mounting the top portion, I might as well follow suit.

Any help would be great (I'm picking up the grille next weekend). It'll be painted this week. Thanks everybody.

Drex,

I've been thinking of painting my CL grill all black but not sure if it will look good or not. At first I wanted to remove the Big Star but this thing is glued shut and I know it will break if I pry it off.

Do you think painting the whole grill black would look good?

If you bought it from formymercedes.com I'm pretty sure he uses epoxy to glue the star on, so that thing is definitely not coming off easily. I say have your bodyshop cut the whole star out, connect the slats using fiberglass, paint body color, and have a nice custom starless grille!

It may look alright. I haven't seen it done, so couldn't really tell you. It'll be original to have the entire thing black, but I think the regular grille painted all black looks good for sure.

The reason I wanted to color match everything except for the big star was #1) I'm not a big "chrome" fan, #2) from far away, with the entire grille painted except for the big star, the grille looks like part of the hood.

You may want to try it just to be original, but make sure you are convinced of that because you won't be able to go back later on.

You looking at 1K to a good job. I had mine done last year for approx that amount but due to a few 'issues' I was never able to use it....
