What does COMAND do?

Is a better head unit also?

Can it be easily swapped for my non-command 2005 unit in my 230K? If so, will I then have the Sirius option?

Also my radio is a bit anemic, is this a function of the speakers or the unit or both?

I'm not sure what I mean. I have the stock, standard system that comes in a 2005 230K sedan.

COMAND = ****pit MANagement Display

from steves website

"The COMAND (****pit MANagement Display) system is a central point for operation of many features found in late model Mercedes-Benz vehicles. COMAND has shipped in US models since model year 2000 cars. It was originally available as an option for the E-class and CLK-class (starting in 2000), and the C-class (starting in 2001). It ships as a standard feature on the S-class and CL-class starting in 2000, and the SL-class in 2003.

COMAND fully integrates the functions of the radio, navigation system, and controls for the optional CD changer and integrated mobile phone. The interface is presented to the user on a full-color in-dash LCD display, and can present some information in the instrument cluster central display. Cars equipped with multifunctional steering wheel buttons can control some aspects of the COMAND"

Thanks for the info. A bit more reseach has shown that all I really want is the Harmond-Kardon unit for my 230.

Will this swap out for the exisiting unit?

The head unit is the same for the HK option. HK changes the speakers, adds a box in the trunk that has a beefier amp, and a sub-woofer gets installed. The amp needs to be connected to the MOST fiber optic ring, and the rear CAN needs to be programmed to know that you have the amp and woofer. Go test drive a car with this option to see if it is worth it to you. You get more "thump" and a bit more control over the sound field through the controls on the radio. At the parts counter, they want about the same as an upscale week at Di$ney World. I have not been able to find a wreck with this equipment in CA.

Command has about the same poop as the stock radio. It basically adds navigation to your car. It is kinda nifty. A US version comand is almost impossible to find. Many Euro versions are available. Installation is not hard, but there are a few minor problems that need to be sorted if you do not have the exact part number for your chassis. The Euro version has a TV button that allows you to add a tuner to watch TV on a tiny screen on the dash, but cannot conect to the Sirius Satellite receiver by Delphi for Mercedes-Benz. The Euro Comand has a nice female voice with a British accent.

The US Comand has a SAT button that does integrate the SDAR (Satellite Digital Auto Radio) receiver. The US Comand has a drop down screen that reveals a DVD (Digital Versital Disc) deck, as well as a CD (Compact Disc) deck. The DVD deck only uses navigation disc's, so you cannot play a movie. The CD deck only plays CD's and may need a mod to play CD's made on your home burner. I don't know what the status of MP3 play is.

Good info moviela. I was taking a US command install into consideration but I'm thinking of going with an after market NAV system instead. You get more options and entertainment value with a fully intergrated NAV AV system.
