I bought my car about a few weeks back and have noticed the wiper studdering problem. Stangely, the studdering happens on the downstroke of the drivers side, and the upstroke of the passengers.

It was so annoying and LOUD, that I ended up turning off the wipers and using the "one-stroke" button when the rain got too built up. Thats fun.

I'm going to bring it in to my dealer tomorrow. I am picking up a new key anyway so I will be there with the car.

Unfortunately, with some of the posts here, it doesnt sound like there is a clear fix for this. I wish it were as easy as "replacing wiper blades", but from the replies that is not often the case.

Try to lubricate your wipers with washing fluid once in a while. I get the skipping myself. But then I spray on the washing fluid and the skipping goes away and doesn't return for a long time. When it does return, repeat the same process.

Resurrecting this thread because wiper chatter's been an issue for me too and the rainy season is on us again. There are other threads on this topic for the W211 and here in Tech Talk.

There's a TSB out on this which basically says the following: ensure the wiper blades are good, the washer nozzles are correctly aimed, the "right" windshield washer fluid is being used, and the windshield is clean. Then, if the problem remains, use a special tool to adjust the wiper arms. On the W203, there are different procedures for the old style and new aero-style wipers. So the dealer should be able to fix this issue once he's told about the TSB.

If you want to try an adjustment at home, I think the principle involved is to get the wiper blade perpendicular to the plane of the windshield. On my car, an '03, torque can be applied with a crescent wrench about midway up the wiper arm. This helped in my case.

Guys - I had this same problem with my car and my dad had the problem with his (both are C classes). Different dealers told both of us we're the only ones they've ever heard of with these problems. My dad let them try to fix it 5 times and they never could. I tried twice with no luck. So he went to Pep Boys and bought new Bosch wipers for $80 and tried it and that solved the problem. He went to the dealer and asked for them to reimburse him since he figured out the problem was with the OEM parts and they said no way, so he ate the cost. Then sent me a pair and it's solved the problem on my car. They know about the problem but are too cheap/stupid to get it right...

Anyone who can solve the problem themselves by buying a part out of their own pocket when the dealer repeatedly fails should be reimbursed for the part by MB.

Do not ever use Rain-x ( or anything similar ) on your front windscreen! I have tried it on 2 of my cars previously and it caused the wipers to judder in operation, so I have been religiously avoiding it since.

However, I sent my W203 for valeting recently, and they applied rain-x despite my telling them not to apply anything on the windscreen As expected, it caused the wipers to judder and chatter over the glass. Managed to remove the rain-x with some glass polish, and the problem went away.

I wish I had read this thread before yesterday. I never had this problem till I put Rain X on the windsheild yesterday. Guess I'll try to bend the wipers off the windsheild a little bit.

Bending the wipers off the windshield doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I'd recommend sv4's approach instead.

they have this auto wiping sensor thing install ...

when i turn it on the first click .. its all smooth.. then once ur driving fast or the rain get hard, it senses it and does the calculation ...
but once ur stopped fully it stops. and continues when u drive again ..

For future reference, these wipers will not work with aero wipers ('04 and above, though it may work with the '03 and below); the mounting is completely different. I picked them up from NAPA auto parts the other day and had to return them. BTW, the wipers on the '04 coupe are both 22", though they may be different on the sedan.

It looks like I'm going to be going OEM for the wipers this time, but does anyone know a plug-and-play aftermarket for the aero wiper mounting? It's not the traditional "U" shaped mounting.
