2006 C230 Sedan
Got a good one for you guys... Riddle me this.

So i was messing with the car and took off the airbox. Put everything back together after cleaning it out. It had a bunch of debris in it. I drive for about 15 minutes and I get the dreaded check engine light. I do a little research and find out that if the air box is not properly situated on the MAF sensor you may get a fault code. I go back downstairs and check everything. The box did seem a bit loose. I smacked the back end of it and it clicked into place. The check engine light is still on. I went to Autozone to get it scanned and their OBDII machine could not link up to my car. I then went to Discount Auto parts and got the same results. I then went home and pulled the negative battery terminal to see if that would reset the fault code. It did not. So where do I go from here? My car is an 06 C230 Sport Sedan.

1. Any idea why these OBDII machines were not able to link up to my car?
2. When can I expect my check engine light to go away?
3. Is there any other way I can reset that light?

I searched the forums but only found general info not specific to the problems I am having. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx !

I'm curious, why don't you bring it to the dealer and have them fix it under warranty instead of fixing it on your own ?

That's my last choice. I dont really want to deal with the hassle of having to take time off from work. Getting a ride yada yada yada. In the end I will probably end up doing just that but it would be nice if i could resolve said issue without having to take it in.

Okay. maybe the MB dealers FL do things differently than the ones here in CA. Here, I would just call them and tell them I want to bring my car in for service and I need a free loaner car. And while they work on my car, I would drive another MB, so it's no hassle at all.

Each dealer is a little different. The one I just bought from yesterday will pick up(leave a loaner) and return when finished for no charge for the first year. Free loaners are included for as long as you own the car. If you want the pick up and drop off service after the first year, they may charge a little. Also may depend on what type of car you bought and whether you paid sticker or invoice! I bought a C230 at invoice, so I don't expect the same kinda perks as the guy who bought an SL65 AMG for $190,000!!!!

In your case, the only way you're going to get rid of the check engine light is to go to the dealer.

Yeah i think I will most probably go to the dealer on Monday. On a side note does anyone have any idea if there is a chance that light may just go away? Im hoping it will between now and Monday. I just am a bit weary of leaving my car with those clowns. I have seen some of the kids that work there. I will flip out if there is so much as a nick on one of my HRE's. Believe you me I will be doing a complete walk around with the service advisor.

Diagnostic tool problem

So i have tried to connect my car to four different OBDII scanners today from various places. Not one of them could link up to my car. They all gave an error to the effect of not able to link or communicate with car. Any ideas?

I've seen that happen with other software but the software I use from OBD-2.com works great, never had a problem connecting.

Problem fixed. Tt was the darn gas cap. I thought i had tightened it enough. Obviously not. I tightened it with my kung fu death grip. The minute i started the car. The check engine light disappeared. What a great feeling !

I merged your treads since they deal with the same topic. Lets not start another one just hours apart.

I doubt that was the problem but glad it's fixed. Doesn't your gas cap click and slip when it's done tightening? System probably just took that many starts and driving time to correct. I'd be looking at the lack of OBD output problem. Are you going to figure it out and let us know?

That's the weird thing my gas cap does not click. It kind of just sinks in and locks as i turn it. I called the dealership about the lack of OBD info output. They told me that most of the Auto Zone, Pep Boy places don't have the right OBDII tool. Maybe hogwash but who knows?
Perhaps you are right and it was just a mere coincedence that the minute I tightened the cap the ligh shut off. In any event im just glad its gone. Talk about an eyesore!

Oops...the click and slip is my other car. My cap works the same as yours OBDII is a standard, at least in the US. They are feeding you a line.

Okay guys - since I'm one of the few people who even has nearby access to some 'good' ODBII computers, let me just say that the only ODBII computer that seems to read the MB diagnostics, resetting lights, etc. is the Snap-On MODIS - and damn, its a great machine (for $13K it better be).

Star/MODIS diagnostics are a whole different level. OBDII is a standard that any OBDII meter...whether it cost $39 or $13,000 can read. Without ithe port working you won't be able to get your car smog certified...or be able to read any of the simple codes that cover many/most of the engine functions.
