this is a double din unite right? if so...it'll look like the eclipse unit.

i have this unit in my car and they had to use a custom bracket for it...

had a flip out screen before and i actually that that more cuz you'll have a space to put your stuff...now...theres no place to put anything

The Z1 is a flip out screen. the pictue by JTc320 is the D1 or D2. The Z1 is a single DIN and would need a dash kit (sold everywhere).

definitely not a flip out screen MPH, i think the previews of it had it as a flip out but they changed it to 7" touch screen

Oh! That is the new model! Im sorry, I was thinking about the N1...You may just need a minor kit to fill the spaces then! That thing is sweet, but you loose the steering wheel controls...

It's actually got both...HDD for Navi/Music and DVD drive for movies/CDs.

This is my next mod, IF it can play movies while driving. If they disable it and you can't hack it, I'll keep my unit.

The AVIC-Z1 can use 10GB of its HDD space for a music library. You can listen to music while at the same time ripping and storing at 4 times playing speed. The system also includes the Gracenote CDDB™ Music Recognition Service, which automatically "tags" the music you record with the artist name, song title, genre, and album title. This lets you directly access the music library's content by simply saying the artist name, song title, genre, or album title.

The AVIC-Z1 is a full-featured audio entertainment system. The built-in DVD/CD player allows you to play either DVD Video (for the rear seat entertainment capability), or play CD's with Audio or MP3 files. Listen to AM/FM radio from the high-performance Supertuner IIID tuner. Your music comes alive with maximum power (MOSFET50) and sound performance (Easy EQ).

i found this for 2005-2006 C/Clk, but they only have single din.

http://www.installer-data.com/item/d...php?it=99-8712

U guys think that it would be easy to cut or melt the plastic middle bar and remove the storage container? if not anyone know any installers that can fabricate a custom one?? dont know if i wanna waste 50 bucks to see if its possible

Hello all:

I have a AVIC-D1 installed in my 02 C240. You don't need a customized installation kit/consle for the double din. There are several that are already made. The kit from American International is a perfect fit. No custom bracket needed. If an installer said it needed one, then they are pulling a fast one.

Sorry for not having pics...but I also have the reverse camera and the sirius tuner. The amp is now located in the space where the first aid kit once resided. Currently, I'm installing a sub with an additional amp. Just trying to work out the logistics of what goes where...

All in all, the pioneer unit (double din) will look nice in your car.

THe hack is rather simple. My installer did the over-ride for both my AVIC -N2 that's in my X3 and also for the AVIC-D1 that in the C240. Now both unit are operable when the vehicle is in motion. The D1 doesn't have DVD but the nav functions are available while in motion. I wished I'd waited for the Z...

Yeah that's why I didn't get the D1...I was told the new ones have gyro's and not just grounding the e-brake wire...do you have any more info on the bypass?

The AVIC-N3's have a toggle switch in the back of the unit and all you need to do is flip this switch and still ground to the e-brake and your set for in motion dvd playing. or so thats what a buddy on e46fanatics wrote up and told me. im looking into the new N3 only because I can still keep little things in the lower din space.

Have you read the specs on this thing? I love my N1 but I'm not delusional, I know it doesn't hold a candle to this thing.

The hack on the N2 is exponentially more difficult than the D1. They both have gyros, but the hack bypassed both and allowed for the full functionality. For the N2, my installer made a connection between two points found on the bottom of the headunit itself ($50 fee). There was a silver tape, that once removed revealed holes in the frame. The holes were above two solder points and those points were connected to provider the over-ride.

For the D1, all he did (for a $20 fee) was ground a wire from the harness and connected it to a blank spot into the same harness. simple.

I don't know about the N3 as I don't have one nor do I have a 3rd vehicle to put it into...however, If the N2 required work, I am uncertain that there would be a toggle switch to provider the hack. Most installer don't even want to do the over-ride for fear of lawsuits...therefore, I don't see pioneer providing a simple solution. Then again, I admittedly don't know.

Haha, the place that installed mine was like...you see this wire? If you happen to screw it in here (and he points) it will work in motion. I'm going to the bathroom, a screwdriver and screw is on the seat, in case you need one. He comes back 2 mins later. No charge

N2 looks like *** in a MB. All are easy to bypass - my new Z1 has all functions available when moving just by flashing the parking lights twice at startup (or there is a module avail. to do it for you)

I haven't seen the N2 in a MB...However, judging by how the N2 looks in my X3, I'd agree with you. Hence the reason i'm glad the MB is double din.

My source said there is no need to flash the lights on the Z1 because all he did to his was ground the green brake wire. That, he said, was sufficient to provide the bypass.

I'll find out in a couple of days because I got the Z1...The dealership damaged my new D1 during the B service. They agreeed to pay for a replacement so I got the Z1... How did you connect to the speed sensor? Are you using a Can-Bus? Anxiously waiting to hear from you...

installation in northering VA/washington DC area?

ok... i've finally decided to go with the avic-z1, but i don't know where to get it installed. i want to get installed so that i will be able to use it while driving (so i guess illegally? haha). does anyone know a guy in the washington DC/Northern Virginia area?

i know there is an extensive DIY post on this... but I just feel safer getting it done at a professional place so I can get help in case something goes wrong.

plus, tweeters quoted 300-400 more for a custom double din harness... which i think is absurd. i am very concerned in it looking flush with my car...

I'll post some pics of my D-2 installed in my car. It looks awesome. Very clean install and I believe its the same dimensions as the Z1. I'd recommend going to a professional place to do it.

I've also been on the avic forum for a while and have found a bunch of good info on there.
