Extended Warranty from MBUSA Purchase in NY Opinion

Hey guys,

My car is about 3 days until it hits the 1 year mark. The dealer offered me extended warranty for my car at a discount direct from MBUSA and not a third party member for the price of $3700.00. Is this price fair? This suppose to be discounted and only given to people whose cars are within 1 year of purchase.

The price adds 3 additional years and 50k to the orig. So it would be 7years or 100k miles.

I was thinking the worse that could happen is a bad tranny in the future. How much would that cost if I needed it replaced?

I'm confused. Is it worth that much money?

a quarter mile at a time
I don't know about a discount but the MB Factory warrany can only be purchased within 1 yr anyway.

Have you had problems with your particular car? If your car is particularly problematic, it would be a better idea to get the warranty.

How long do you expect to keep the car? If you intend to keep the car for a long time, the extended warranty may be a good option.

I'm a bit in the same boat. I bought my car last january and that's the biggest thing on my mind.

My dealer is a crook. I called back and told him that a friend(you) got the warranty for $2700 and he said thats impossible. He said that the price could not be from MBUSA but from a third party place. He than counter offered me with $3250.00. Is this crazy or what?

The dealer is telling the truth abou the warranty (2700 vs. over 3000)

The MBUSA warranty is much much better than the aftermarket 2700 ones

I would go for the dealer MBUSA ones.. maybe try to bargain w/ the guy again to around $3,000. but regardless it is a good investment. you will make money on it. cuz of all the small things that can go wrong... ie power steering pump / window motor / other small things that will costs more than you can imagin; ofcourse the tranny toooo.

I called a few dealers and almost all of the want the retail price of $3700 which is 7 years 100K which includes the normal factory. Its basically 3 year+30K and I looked at MBUSA which costs $3700.

I called the original dealer and made an argument on the discount and such and finally the stupid *** dropped the price to $3250. I guess thats the best I can get out of it.

I wish I made the bargain up front when I purchased the car but sometimes these guys are sneaky and put in the cost inside the interest or the purchase price and try to hide the low price which you think you are getting.

Believe it or not, I only have about 5000 miles on my car and owned it for 1 year coming up in these few days. I have another car which I drive most of the time and keep the benz in the garage in showroom quality condition. Thats why I am tempted to keep the car for 3 years and sell it and buy another Benz or BMW. But I have to say that I am very very happy that I bought the 4 cylinder model before they came out with the V6. "Man" so many decisions....

Rlee... How long ago did you get the extended.... because i think they stop offering MBUSA warranty to 1+ years owners a while now.

anotherword you can only buy the 7 yr 100k extended while the car is under 1year old.

once your car is over 1 years old, all extended warranties are offered by 3rd parties that have deals with the dealer to sell for them.

I tried to look for MBUSA warranty for my 3+years C class and none of the dealers here in California offers it.

Maybe it's different in boston, but i doubt it cuz it's mbUSA

If it's any help I have a 2004 C240 and I purchased my 3 year MBUSA Extended Warranty in 2005 for $1,670.00 when my local dealer wanted $2,700.00.

I purchased it over the phone via a credit card from Courtesy Motors in Chico, California. Back then they were the best offer I could find. Although that might not be case today, I wouldn't hurt to get a quote from them since it's MBUSA who gives you the warranty and not the dealer. Hence, it's immaterial from whom you buy it.

Luck...

I purchased my extended warranty from MB like 2 days before my one year was up. I bought the additional 3 years or 100k. I dont remember what I paid for it, but I can look that up later.

You can get MB warranty after one year but it costs more:

13-24mo 10% surcharge
25-36mo 15% surcharge
37-48mo 20% surcharge
added to suggested retail price

I got this from http://www.mbusa.com/models/features...0WZ&class=06_C
its in the fine print at the bottom

I live in Metro DC and bought a new C240 in September 2005. A month of two thereafter, I purchased my MB extended warranty from Chico/Courtesty Motors. It is indeed an official MB Factory warranty, 3 years 100K miles. Dealer/MB price = $3,700. Through Courtesy, I paid $2,990.00.

Contact Mr. J. Park or Ms. Lisa Lehrbaum (preferably Mr. Park because Lisa doesn't really do warranties anymore)

Courtesy Motors Auto Center, Inc.
Chico, CA

1-800-655-3535

You have to keep trying - they are a bit difficult to nail down on the phone and I didn't find them too responsive to voice mail messages.

And, be forewarned. While the warranty will show in dealer's systems, you won't receive the actual MB warranty documents for about 3 months. When mine arrived, it was the "California" MB Owners Extended Warranty and a wallet card. Not that the "California" designation matters.

Youz a crazy man.

I'm a little nuts myself because I too decided the extended warranty was doo doo but I also go through cars like water. The benz is my 9th new car in 4 years. But I'm happier than a pig in poop I got rid of my 350Z for the benz.

The weird thing is my Tahoe (which was 10 grand more than the benz...all the bells and whistles) the extended warranty 7/100,000 was only $1400 with 3/30,000 factory. The benz is 5/50,000 and they offered the extended warranty to me to $3400 when I purchased it. Now that is taking into consideration Mercedes parts are more expensive than GM but I'm not going to have the car more than 2 more years so who really cares. The same financing guy started his conversation with me saying "If you guy the extended warranty I get a $500 bonus". I replied with "How about you give me all of the off the price now and I'll give you a 100 dollar bill?". He was hurt by my offer. What a tool!

I usually steer clear of extended warranties, but that's me. I've worked in the insurance industry for 16 years and I know a little about risk management & pricing.

When buying an extended warranty you are essentially prepaying for repairs that you may never have. All in all, the seller of the warranty is in business to make money. They look at the average price of fixes they will have to cover over a large number of cars (theory of probability and the law of large numbers), add a little for expenses, and add a little more for profit. What we're left with is the cost of the warranty. Therefore, if you take a large enough sampling of cars, a very high percentage (95 - 98%) will not have repair costs that exceed the cost of the warranty (if they did then the warranty seller would go out of business). Of course, there are the few cars that have covered repairs with costs that greatly exceed the price of the warranty. These people are very glad they bought the warranty!

So, in a nutshell, buy the warranty if you really must have the peace of mind and you are 100% sure you are going to keep your car until the warranty expires. Otherwise, take the money you would've spent on the warranty, put it away in a savings account, and use it for repairs that may (or may not) be needed when your factory warranty expires.

BTW, I've owned the following brand new cars over my lifetime, driven all of them way past the length of the factory warranty, and I HAVE NEVER HAD repair costs that exceeded the price of the extended warranty I was offered a time of purchase. If I bought the extended warranty on any of these cars I would have lost lots of money. And yes, I drive a lot of miles.

1988 Pontiac Le Mans. Traded in with 135,000 miles
1993 Saturn SC2. Traded in with 110,000 miles
1996 Saturn SL2. Traded in with 102,000 miles
1997 Saturn SC2 (my wife's car at the time). Traded in with 108,000 miles
2000 Volkswagen Passat GLS. Traded in for my 2006 Mercedes with 101,000 miles.
2003 Acura MDX. Currently own. Car has 65,000 miles.
2006 Mercedes C280 4Matic. Car has 4,200 miles.

This may sound nuts, but you can by a factory Mercedes warranter from any Dodge or Chrysler dealer that is a factory warranty. It costs less and it will actually cover the radio which the warranty the MB dealer sells doesn't. This information was acurate a couple of years ago, so you would need to double chech now.

Also, the dealer in Chico, CA offered to sell the warranty in 2004 for 1690. Maybe call them.

What good is an expensive extended warranty when it doesn't even cover an ashtray and cup holder?

So what DOES the stupid warranty cover?

I got my extended warranty immediately when I got the car at the dealership. If I remember correctly, I acquired the warranty in the $2200 range and I later found out that I overpaid. There's a set retail price to it, all dealerships mark it up.

Try the BMW extended maintenance committment. That is supposed to be only $1700 +/-. My local BMW dealership charges about double for it if I remember correctly.

Obviously, you should try another dealership. That's the no brainer approach. Just make sure you get the MBUSA one. It's usually more comprehensive and it's less paperwork for your service advisor. Gotta be nice to Mr. Service Advisor.

Thanks for all your feedback. I'm still shopping around and can't find anything less than $3200.00. If I can find someone for $2k I would buy it immediately.
