Hitch needed for 2006 C230 Sport
#5
I agree, but when you can't hear yourself talk when the windows are down and the sunroof open that gets old really quick. Plus it is so hard to wash and to keep the roof clean. Plus it drops my fuel economy to 27-28 on the highway...that is 2-3 mpg difference.
If there are hitches for a Miata and Corvette come on we can have a hitch for our C230.

If I remember correctly, and I've slept since then, there are aftermarket hitches available for the regular models but not for the sport models due to the differences of the rear bumper. Someone posted this once on here. Might do a STFF.

they are available in Europe and are a pain to install. It swings out and is hidden when not in use. Pulling a trailer will also lower your fuel ecomomy by 2-3 if not more. A complete trailer kit comes with a trailer control module, harness, and mounting hardware.

US hitch
They are made for the euro market, by a company called ORIS. They make several styles, including one that swings away automatically.
MBUSA told me directly that they do not recommend towing with the C-class, and have not approved any hitches for the car. ORIS has told me that they won't be making any hitches for the US market because their contract with MB precludes them from making any MB-compatible part other than what MB asks them to make.
The euro style hitch doesn't look like a US hitch, but it can probably be modified to work.
I have found a euro MB dealer who (so far) is willing to sell me a hitch and ship it here. I'll be arranging something soon. $$$!

Listen guys, I could really use a definitive answer here. I'm moving to California in two weeks and I need to know if hitches are possible or not on a 2005 c230 compressor. If not, then I need to make some other plans. Thank you all in advance.

You need Hitch? I don't think he hauls bicycles. He might be able to teach you how to sweep a girl off her feet using your bicycle rather than your Benz though...
His number is on his card in the movie...

I researched this....on the coupe...
It was like $750 for the kit, uninstalled.. + shipping from Europe.
Somewhere around here I think I posted a pdf, not sure.
Whatever dealer said there's no approved hitch for the C is full of BS.
Instructions and PN's are the service DVD, but the parts are only available in Europe. It required cutting the underside of the bumper to some degree....and
other things.
Steve NL said that he wasn't sure if the ball was the right size for US,
and no way to know if it could be retrofitted, and then there's the
$XXXX.00 for install, shipping, retrofit, and a hitch mounted bike rack,
even if it worked it'd be well over a grand for a freakin' bike rack.
F that.
And besides, it would take a month just to order it....
and no returns.

See the attached file if you care to...
change the file extension to zip, and it contain 4 pdfs with all the pn's.
Here's my response from Steve. The dollar is much worse now than in
Aug 07.
The part number you wanted us to check, A2033100295, is for hardware only.
It doesn't include the electronics (wiring) that is needed for the hitch.
For a complete kit you will need a part number that starts with 'B6'.
Also, please be aware of the following:
* the Euro spec ball of the hitch is of a different size compared to the US
spec *****! So if you want to use this hitch, you either have to try and
mount the US spec ball on the hitch, or you have to get trailers with Euro
spec 'heads' that fit this ball.
* Euro spec hitches come with a 13pin connector, with which you can use an
adapter cable that goes to the 7pin connector of your car.
Steve tried to run your car's VIN in his EPC, but appearantly it's not
correct. As his EPC didn't come up with any info. But anyways, if your car
doesn't have a 600W fan you have to upgrade yours to a 600W before you will
actually be able to get the hitch mounted and working.
As for prices:
* hitch (complete - USD 785
* electronics set (complete) - USD 300
* extra parts that are needed for the trailer parts and adapter cable from
13 to 7pin connector are NOT included! The extra 'holder' for the removable
hitch ball is NOT included - but that part doesn't cost that much anyways.
All quoted prices are excluding shipping cost.
***please leave the string of mails attached in your reply***

I have the basic rack plus the bicycle rack from my dealer. It is a great fit and the rack locks with key lock. It takes 5 minutes to install and remove off my roof. I have part numbers for both if anyone needs them.

I'm glad I have a coupe....I don't need no stinking rack....but wish I had one, but I'm not paying $500 +++ to do so.

The Curt hitch for the c230 sedan does not fit the c230 coupe. I am also trying to just put a bike rack on the back (does not use a hitch ball, but just the tow bar shaft). The guys at a local hitch speciality shop said they will just weld a hitch on there for me this upcoming week for around $400. Does this sound like a good idea?

C230 2.3 Manual Coupe
I got one for my Volvo last year and you can't even see it. It took an hour to install between the frame and the muffler.
The plastic rear bumper bends up when you insert the bike rack. It's great for road bikes but for mountain bikes with the excessive top frame slant the front bike tires ride low and can scrape the road. I lost a bike wheel once when the friction rub pulled it off. With SUVs they are usually high enough and it's not a problem.
I think I found the part number in JC Whitney and froogled the part and ended up getting it at hitch 4 less or something from Michigan.

Why not just use this type of bike rack? I use this on my C230 and it carries 3 bikes. Once you set it up the first time, and adjust all the ties, it goes on and off in about 90 seconds. They only cost like $50 and they hold your bike very securely. I had two bikes on this and drove on the highway to Whistler (about 100km) and no problems at all.
