It looks better than stock. Hopefully it will perform better too.

no one has done any testing of a intercooler that i am aware of. Speculation is anywhere from8-15 hp increase. The efficiancey of the intercooler is much better, which will keep the coupes from loosing hp because of heat. It might not provide much hp gain, but I think it will keep us from loosing hp due to the increasing in air temp going into the cylinder.
here is a simple test as to what the intercooler will be like.
This morning I went into the dealer at 7:30. I left the house at 6:45, it was still dark and 62 degrees out, the car was so peppy.
Left the dealer at 10:00 it was 81 degrees and the car was noticably slower, obviously because of the 20 degree change in temp going into the intercooler from the SC. with forced induction cooler is beter.

Actually there are 3 companies that sell an intercooler for us but it's just too pricey. Opera Design ($500 but only sells it as part of a kit), Renntech (over $5,000 but part of a kit that's over $7,000) and Vaeth (over $4,000). They all seem to claim 15-20hp. One person on the SLK forum got the Opera Design intercooler and he did not notice any difference driving it, so it failed the butt dyno test. The real performance gain would be at very high RPM if a) the new intercooler flowed better, b) it cooled better. I think to get the most benefit you would have to have a good flow tested system from end to end and not just a core with end tanks welded on. But the true measure will be so see what people get on the dyno.
Does this intercooler retain the factory harmonic balancer?

How come it does not look aby bigger then stock? I count the stock intercooler has about 5 row across and your new intercoller has 7 row across. That's only about 1" thicker.

What i meant was that, it only add one 1 or 2 extra row.

it adds 2 rows. 2 more is 40% (from 5). what is your question? please explain more clearly.---
timmy, thanks for the intercooler explanation.
well, i don't know what you mean at all??? it adds 2 rows. 2 more is 40% (from 5). what is your question? please

Let me try to explain this, if you look at the Renntech intercooler, there's only 7 row on the intercooler (that air flow through). The factory intercooler has about 6 row. I was expecting the the upgrade intercooler would double the size of the factory intercooler. Like James Wei (blue Slk) has Sparco intercooler that has about 11 row of air flow through.

so the oem intercooler has 6 rows? you're messin' w/ my math...
what is a sparco? what is an SLK? i remember something about an slkowner bashing coupes... :p
That's uncalled for Young. Attacking a forum member just because he doesn't have a car like yours. I frequent the SLK forums myself to find out what they are doing because they have more experience with 2.3L motor performance mods than C-Coupe owners.
attack? ok, then, i'm sorry. no attack intended.
i was merely pointing out that b/c another company makes a different intercooler, i don't see why other manufacturers would be similar. (i assume sparco makes bigger-than-renntech intercoolers)
are you talking about the math? i point that out b/c linh first says there are 5 rows. then he says there are "about 6". if there are 6, then it would be a 20% increase? but can you just count rows to figure out what the increase in size is? normally, i'd assume surface area.

the slkowner bashing coupes reference was to this thread:

afaik, linh, you are not slkride.
the :p smiley was an attempt to pull-in those slk comments - a very loose tie-in to your slk reference. it was meant to be funny but i'm guessing you didn't think so. (and frankly, now that i sort of explained it, i'm not laughing either
)
it's time for the healing to happen. slk owners and coupsters - group hug
---
can you get back to intercoolers?
linh, are you "disappointed" that the intercooler isn't as large as the spEarco? is the intercooler for the coupe the same as the slk? is the renntech intercooler as effective as spEarcos? does spEarco make intercoolers for the coupes?

Not to add anymore confusion to this otherwise fruitless thread, but it's Spearco. Even at that it's really now Turbonetics.
Sparco, on the other hand makes seats. No not the foo-foo leather seats/sofas typically found on grandma's Cadillac, Lincoln or MB sedan.

argh!!! linh, you're killing me... (well, at least my spelling and math).
yes, that is humor...
i have made the correction in my post.

Young,
I said, link me to "my post" Slk owner bashing C coupe. I was not part with those Slk owner bashing C coupe owner.
No, not at all. I was just surprised when compared to James Wei sparco intercooler. Bigger does not alway mean better (more pressure drop) Small but efficient is the best. That's why Mercedes installed that intercooler cover that creates a direct air injection.
yes, the Slk and C coupe intercooler is the same.

Linh it's much larger you have to look at surface area not just rows the new intercooler core is longer, wider and taller. The other core that your were talking about on the slk that has 11 rows is much narrower and thinner. The number of rows does not directly relate to it's efficiency.
Any way I ran into some problems and I have to send it back for some more work. Maybe next week I can try again.
