Auto-dimming sucks - trying to disable
Auto-dimming getting on my nerves folks -- too hard to see if police cars
or other MBs
approaching.
From what I can tell from the manual and by searching the forum, the auto-dimming feature on our cars does not have a sort of bypass switch that can be accessed through the on-screen menu or by a button. If light from oncoming cars' headlights hits the sensor in the back of the inside rear view mirror (the plastic part), then the mirror dims. This sensor also causes the driver's side mirror to dim.
Leads to a couple questions:
* Any elegant way to disable, other than putting a piece of electrical tape on the sensor?
* It also looks like there is some kind of sensor on the glass part of the mirror. Looks like a small chip in the top right corner. What's that thing?
Thanks!

That's what I feared -- no bypass switch. Sometimes auto-dimming can be useful, but I think some competitors have a bypass switch.
I honestly don't get the engineering on this feature. Check out this test: started the car in the garage, so it's bright outside, dark in the garage and lights are on using auto setting. Put my hand over the auto-dimming sensor on the back (plastic part) of the inside mirror and it dims! Why? Where the F* is Dr. Z when you need him?
